Happy Birthday to Dr. Royal H. Burpee, born June 4, 1897 — the man behind one of fitness’s most loved, and hated, movements. 🎉

When he created the burpee in 1939, it didn’t include a push-up or jump. The original version was a simple fitness test designed to measure agility and coordination. The push-up variation came later as military training and fitness programs made the movement more challenging.

Safe to say… Dr. Burpee probably never imagined what this movement would become 😅

Phoenix Firefighter Brad Harper, 23, of Peoria, Arizona, died while on the scene of a two-alarm fire on May 19, 2013. Harper loved being a firefighter and had worked with the Phoenix Fire Department, where he was assigned to Rescue 21, for two years.
