Yesterday was day three of the Noguchi Taikai in Detroit, and it was just as much fun as the previous two days. Huge thanks and respect to Sean Askew and his wife, Kei Askew, for their hard work organizing these events.

I'm terrible at remembering to take photos to document these events. Each night, I would tell myself, "Hey, take some pics tomorrow," but I never do. The good news is that there were professional photographers on-site, and there will be an event video in a few months.

Connecting with long-time friends and meeting some new people has filled my heart with joy. Training with those long-time friends has left me with many bruises to remember the weekend (thanks, as****es 😄).

I appreciate and feel inspired by Noguchi's movement. In 35 years, I hope to be leaping around and smiling the way he did this weekend.

Guest instructors Alex Meehan and Christian Petroccello provided solid reminders of developing great taijutsu through mindful kihon practice. I don't know if I've ever said this in class, but bent knees, hip/shoulder alignment, and keeping your hips and head at a uniform level seem to be important for our way of moving.

Sean Askew's morning pre-event presentations were pretty fantastic. I enjoy his approach and demonstration of fundamental skills. It made me smile.

On this trip, we celebrated a major milestone for fellow Tenchijin Dojo budoka, Doug Beardsley. That celebration may have led to a few people having a hard time on Sunday morning. It was a well-deserved accomplishment, and I'm sure everyone agrees the celebration was worth it.

I've started collecting my weekend notes while they're fresh in my head, but after 18 hours of fast-paced training over 3 days, there's a lot that I have already forgotten.

Bojutsu - Striking a target
After practicing the basic mechanics of striking with a rokushakubo the next step is to strike against a target. This video presents one option using a standing punching bag from Century Martial Arts. Other options that I’ve used in the past include bolting a tire to a post or hanging it from a tree branch, or striking a tree. Just be aware that striking some surfaces with your bo can damage the bo or the target, and be careful of splinters.

Bojutsu - Kihon Uchi Gata 1 (基本打ち型其の一) - Fundamental striking sequence 1
Putting together the foundational strikes into one series of movements. This can be done with a rotating step (as illustrated), stepping forward, backward, and other footwork combinations.
Note: this isn’t presented as a formal kata from Kukishinden or any other ryuha, it’s a movement pattern that I use in my dojo to practice striking skills.

Bojutsu - Tsuki (突き) - Thrust
Begin in ichimonji or seigan no kamae, slide the rear hand to the end of the rokushakubo, and thrust forward to strike the opponent.

Bojutsu - Age Uchi (揚げ打ち) - Rising Strike
Begin in ichimonji or seigan no kamae, raise the rokushakubo to a vertical position in front of you, step forward with the rear leg and use a levering motion to strike upward to the opponent. Key elements include using the front hand as a sliding fulcrum as the strike approaches the opponent and lever downward with the rear hand while dropping weight low.

Bojutsu - Ashi Barai (足払い) - Ankle/Foot Sweep
Begin in ichimonji or seigan no kamae, pull the rokushakubo backward, step forward with the rear leg and extend the bo to strike the opponent’s ankle. If this strike is aimed higher on the opponents shin/knee it is Sune Uchi. Key elements include using the front hand as a sliding fulcrum as the strike approaches the opponent. Don’t reach beyond the target (overswing). Keep your hips low.
