Calculated miles on foot for the month of September….170.5 miles! No elk were harmed but the country is always spectacular! Hopefully Brenna can get it done with the rifle. Until next September…🏹🏹🏹

New area. Big, deep, and dark. Super steep country with very little roads. Got close, just couldn’t close enough. Saw a glimpse of a bull. Had him within 40 but never saw him good. The chess match between predator and prey is so much fun. This time the prey came out on top.

Just ran out of daylight. Jameson and I chased two bulls for about an hour and a half. Pretty epic end to another archery season. Until next year……

One last attempt. Been a tough season. Hot, dry, and not very productive. The elk just don’t want to play. We’ll see if Jamo and I can give it one good last effort….🏹🏹🏹

Today is as close as I’ve been. Had six cows and calves on a road about 80 yards. I knew the wind was bad and it was a matter of time before they wind me and bust out. I could hear an elk below them. I knew it was the bull. I decided to give a cow bark. The cows proceeded to turn and head up the brush above the road. At that point I gave a bugle. The bull was about 100 yards below the road. He ended up coming into about 50 yards but would commit to the rest of the way. It was then a cat and mouse game for about an hour. Needless to say, I ended up losing him without even seeing a tine. His head gear sounded pretty good going through the brush for a while. Then he caught some trails and snuck out without a peep. My guess is hopefully he’ll be fired up later this evening or maybe tomorrow since he lost his girls. He didn’t want to talk to much. Hopefully I can bump into another one.

Finally had one going last night but it didn’t last long. He came into about 70 yards and decided to high tail it out. Maybe I still have a shot…..

Located another one right at dark. Turn up the volume. Got into him this morning but he did want to play. Ran him across a couple draws but never could catch him. They seem to be tight lipped unless you can get right on them, then you better be ready for a chase.

Camps set up and ready to go. I’ve had a couple different canvas tents but I’m not sure there is a better tent than Cabela’s outfitter series! This one is a 12’x20’ alaknak with vestibule. The canopy is perfect for cooking under. These tents are fantastic! Waterproof and when you add a woodstove, nice and toasty! I think you’d be hard pressed to find a better four season tent. Unlike canvas, these are way lighter in weight compared to the same size canvas. Now, I just need the elk to cooperate!🏹🏹🏹

Went the wrong way this evening but heard this guy on the way back to the pickup…Hopefully things are about to get exciting!🏹🏹🏹

Spent last evening hunting with my youngest on his 18th birthday. Found a whole bunch of trees tore up with what appears to be claw marks from bears. And there was a lot! Went a different direction to try and find a wallow. Ended up spooking a bull. As he filtered off, called in another bull crashing in. He was on the other side of the draw and ended up following the direction of the first bull we jumped. The second one sounded like he had a solid set of head gear. Jameson found an antler. It was an old shed but he’s not picky. I ended up getting stung by a wasp! Through my pants even. They are angry this time of year! We did end up finding a wallow. The three and a half miles we hiked sure felt a lot longer as the terrain was very unforgiving. So far I’ve seen or jumped elk every time I’ve been out. The weather is supposed to cool off next week. Things will only get better as the month continues. Shoot strait 🏹🏹🏹👊
