The difference between a podium finish and the middle of the pack usually happens 10 minutes before the starting gun.

We talk a lot about sail trim, but strategy is where the physical meets the mental. Are you playing the shifts, or are you chasing the fleet? On a crowded line, the "perfect" start isn't always at the favored end, often it’s where you have the lanes to breathe and the height to hold your own.

Pro Tip: Next time you’re on the upwind leg, stop looking at your telltales for a split second. Look at the horizon. (or if possible, have your tactician or crew do the looking) If the pressure is building on the left, but the fleet is stacked right, fortune favors the bold who find the clean air first.

A full day of insight, strategy, and offshore inspiration awaits at the 4th Annual Northeast Ocean Race Symposium, March 21, 2026, at Bentley University in Waltham, MA. Designed for racers and cruisers alike, NORS delivers practical knowledge to help you prepare for your next ocean race or offshore passage.

NORS is jointly sponsored by the Northeast’s four major ocean races: Marion-Bermuda, Bermuda 1-2, Marblehead to Halifax, and Newport Bermuda, and has welcomed hundreds of skippers and crew over the past three years.

The 2026 program features a keynote presentation from professional sailor Ronnie Simpson, skipper of the Open 50 Shipyard Brewing, who competed in the 2023–24 Global Solo Challenge, the world’s first single-handed, non-stop race around the globe, along with seven additional educational and engaging presentations.

We’ll be on site with an exhibit booth and look forward to connecting in person to discuss all of your sail and performance needs.
