RCYC is the club for active individuals, couples, and their families who come to the As Rose City’s Commodore for 2021, I want to welcome you to the “friendliest yacht club on the river.”

First organized in 1932 by a group of Portland boaters on the Willamette River, the

Rose City Yacht Club has evolved over time to its present location on the Columbia River and consisting of over 150 members and boats that embrace all aspects of yachting, whether it be day-sailing, racing or cruising. We are known as a fun loving, down to earth, and do-it-yourself club. We welcome both sail and power boaters to our membership. We take pride in our facilities, have and operate our own dredge, and believe that social activities and community are important aspects to all our members. Whether a novice boater, an experienced racer or preparing your boat for the next cruise down the river or beyond, Rose City has like-minded members that are always willing to share their expertise and love of yachting. Whether you are a member of a reciprocal yacht club interested in tying up for a visit or a potential member who is interested in learning more, I recommend going to either our membership page or our contacts page to find out more about us. Thank you for your interest in Rose City Yacht Club.

If you own a kayak, canoe, or other small non-motorized vessel, please help the Coast Guard and River Patrol by labeling your craft and securing it when not in use. Every unmanned boat found on waterways starts a complicated search and rescue process. A simple "If found please call ____" could save patrols many hours of fruitless searches and help get your boat back to you sooner.

The Coast Guard and its Washington and Oregon boating safety agency partners urge the labeling of paddle craft and owner responsibility on the waters of the Pacific Northwest.

The Oregon Department of State Lands (DSL) needs your feedback regarding a proposed rule. DSL is proposing to restrict recreational access, and to prohibit camping, at several spots along the Columbia. These spots include the north side of Hayden Island, North Portland Harbor, and the Sandy River Delta. A full description of this proposal, as well as information about how you can share your thoughts on this proposal with officials, is available online.

A friendly reminder from Clay Courtwright, Oregon State Parks manager for the Western Columbia River Gorge: All Oregon state parks, day use areas, trails, boat ramps, docks, and campgrounds are closed until further notice.

However, if you're looking for a dock to cruise to, CRYA shared that the courthouse docks at St. Helens and the docks at Sand Island remain open at this time, though only a few of the restaurants in St. Helens remain open (take out only).

Summer boating checklist:
Lifejacket - check
Sunscreen - check
Oregon Boater’s Card - ???

If you’re new to boating, you’ll need an Oregon Boater’s Card to sail or motor on the state’s waterways. (Children ages 12 and up also need a card.) The Daughters of Neptune will host a boater’s education class, taught by members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, at Portland Yacht Club on Sunday, June 23. Please see the flyer in your email inbox for more information.

This class will be the last one for the summer, so if you or someone you know needs to earn their Oregon Boater’s Card, now is the time to register.
