Schooner Sara Jane

Schooner Sara Jane Schooner Sara Jane is owned and operated by Sailing Ships Maine, a youth non-profit sail training org

Sara Jane delivers every ounce of the romance and grace promised by the idea of a classically rigged schooner. A Murray Peterson Coaster III, she sails beautifully under just her lowers – or go all-out and hoist the topsail and fisherman. Her clipper bow, pleasant sheer, bulwarks, monkey rail and attractive transom turn heads in any harbor. Sadly, we have to find new owners and adventurers for Sar

Volunteers welcome on Saturdays in winter and spring to get Schooner Sara Jane ready for her summer season. On sunny days, the temps inside Sara Jane's Bow Shed have been in the 70's while 20's and 30's outside. Shipwright David Stimson continues refastening the hull and making repairs well before they are urgent and teaching volunteers the arts of the shipwright. Boatbuilder Steve Smith has been working on a Bristol Corinthian inside the shop replacing her seats and getting her ready for sale this spring.

An update on Sara Jane. She is inside her own custom Bow-Roof Shed in Bowdoinham, Maine this winter (2023-2024) after a successful second season of sail training under Captain Anna Maria Hansen. Sixty high school students spent a week each aboard engaging in sail training and living on board. Meanwhile, she is being lovingly maintained by master shipwright David Stimson, rigger José M. Hernández-Juviel and Sailing Ships Maine volunteers. She sails out of Freeport, Maine. For those interested in helping high school students expand their horizons, please visit www.sailingshipsmaine.org and consider contributing to our scholarship fund.

Schooner Sara Jane is now a publicly-owned educational asset managed by volunteers based in Maine. After a month in yard this spring powered by volunteer labor, she sailed with 6 high school students per week for 5 weeks extending sail training opportunities in new directions and to new kids. As we write this, are planning youth and adult sail training classes for 2023 on board and underway. If you are interested in organizing a youth, adult or mixed youth/adult sail training group for this summer, please reach out to [email protected] to pick a week. We work with youth orgs, families, yacht clubs, and most importantly schools. We expect to sail the Maine coast from June 1 through Oct. 31 on a series of 5 day training adventures. We will provide a licensed professional captain, a deckhand, groceries, 6 passenger bunks and our accredited nautical science curriculum.
