We are looking forward to Al Wadi Dance Company ‘s Sawa Live Music Immersion Weekend at September 25 - 27!

Get your tickets for classes and shows at alwadi-dance.com ⭐️

“Sawa” means “together” in Arabic, and we believe that dance and music are best experienced in community. These arts have always been intertwined, and we hope to continue to foster this tradition. This will be an intimate weekend at the beautiful Studio Datura.

Join Heather, Ella, and our musical friends for a weekend of dance and live music immersed under one roof. Jim Grippo & Faisal Zedan join us from the Bay Area to root us in the melody and rhythms of Middle Eastern music. Each evening, Saturday and Sunday, we’ll come together for a live show, with very limited spots available for dancers who’d like to perform.

The weekend is offered as two tracks, running side by side in separate studios: a Dance Track, guided by Heather and Ella alongside our visiting musicians, and a Music Track, where musicians can study Arabic percussion with Faisal Zedan and/or build full ensemble pieces with Jim Grippo. Full weekend pass holders are welcome to move between both, since many of our dancers are musicians too. On Sunday afternoon, everyone comes together for Sawa Together, where the ensemble musicians play what they’ve built and dancers move freely to it.

For this quarter’s program, we are donating to and matching donations from our community to Anera ⭐️

Anera has been helping refugees and families in Palestine, Lebanon, and Jordan since 1968. They provide health, education, and economic development programs, as well as humanitarian and emergency relief during conflict and disasters. From family farms and rooftop greenhouses to job skills training to access to clean water and medical aid, we encourage you to check out anera.org and donate.

Datura will match your donation at datura.dance ⭐️

Repost from Anera :

“Above the family homes of Baqa’a Camp, rooftops are becoming places of sanctuary, nourishment and opportunity. Anera is helping 47 families transform these spaces into productive gardens that provide fresh vegetables at home. Using sustainable wicking bed technology, the gardens strengthen food security, reduce household costs and create opportunities to earn additional income by selling surplus produce.

More than places to grow food, these rooftop gardens are green sanctuaries where families build practical skills, expand their growing spaces and cultivate greater self-reliance, one rooftop at a time.”

Sharing this post from Al Wadi Dance Company to let you know drum lessons are happening at the studio beginning on August 26! ⭐️

🎶 Tabla: Beyond Beginners with 🔪🌸🌲🌿Jason 🌿🌲🌸🪓

The tabla (also known as darbouka or derbakke) is one of the most important percussion instruments in the Egyptian orchestra. It lays rhythmic foundations for melodies, and its versatile sounds can also be used for dynamic drum solos. In this course, students will revisit foundations before moving on to more complex techniques and rhythms. This class will help prepare students who would like to perform a group percussion piece in the spring student showcase.
