At the end of the day you must take the player that has the highest ceiling. Undoubtedly that is Gavin McKenna.

Victor Stenberg may be more NHL ready, and he may be a much better 200-foot player, and we sure as hell still need a #1 D-man, but Gavin McKenna has been the best player in his age group for the last three years. He absolutely crushed the scouting combine and has something that you cannot teach … high-end skill.

I love how he’s got a bit of cockiness and swagger to him in a way that doesn’t feel like he’s a prima donna. Matthews or Nylander or Marner wouldn’t have slugged some dude in a bar for chirping their mother. Yeah, Gavin McKenna could maybe end up like a Trevor Zegras or a Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, which would not be ideal, but I would much rather we find out first hand what he becomes. Because if he actually achieves his ceiling (which many believe is a Nikita Kucherov type) and the Leafs pass on him, it’s something that will haunt us for years to come. And we deal with enough already here in Leaf Nation. Gavin McKenna, you are a Maple Leaf. 💙
