Stonecoast Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was the first kids-only Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school in Maine - a distinction that set it apart from traditional academies that simply added youth classes to adult programs.
From the beginning, the school was intentionally designed around children. The curriculum, structure, pacing, and expectations were all built specifically for young athletes and not adapted just as an afterthought.
At the center of it is the owner, whose vision shaped the foundation of the school. With years of experience in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and youth coaching, he recognized that kids thrive when training is structured, consistent, and purpose-driven. Rather than chasing trends or competition accolades alone, he built the program around long-term development.
His approach emphasizes:
• Technical precision from the start
• Discipline before motivation
• Clear standards and accountability
• Confidence earned through consistent effort
• Leadership and respect as non-negotiables
Professor Durfee is known for holding students to a high standard while remaining deeply invested in their growth, not just as athletes, but as young people. Parents often note the transformation they see: improved focus, better listening skills, stronger posture, and increased self-confidence.
By creating Maine’s first dedicated kids-only BJJ school, professor Durfee didn’t just open a gym, he established a training environment where youth development is the priority.
That original philosophy continues to guide the school today: structured, disciplined, and built to shape capable, resilient kids on and off the mat.
