My kid’s school site council is focusing on education around and support for chronic tardiness this year. I feel all kinds of ways about this topic, and it often shifts from hour to hour. As a household full of neurodivergent people, it is no easy task to get everyone prepped and out the door to arrive on time and regulated. Today, as the minutes counted down to the final bell, having abandoned our typical routine of walking to school, we pulled up and parked, and I raced against the bell to read up to the next choice in the Choose Your Own Adventure book. The child would not leave the car until he could head into the building with all day to ponder which adventure he would choose next. In summation: For some of us, getting to school on time is a Herculean effort.
Parenting is the most creative endeavor I have ever attempted.

We are filming the digital portion of the poster we are presenting on September 23 & 24 at the Stanford Neurodiversity Summit…with a handy visual schedule to keep us oriented.
I am so excited to experience this summit in person after years of attending digitally!

Kiddo was sick last week, it was the day of Nana’s burial and the middle of the week. I had a lot to figure out, so I made a list, prioritized the tasks, and created a time bound schedule for the day. My anxiety and overwhelm went down pretty quick. I wasn’t able to stick exactly to the schedule or accomplish all the tasks on my list, but I felt like I had a scaffold in place and it helped me feel more settled and capable. The strategies I practice, and teach do not take away the anxiety and overwhelm, but they lessen the magnitude of the feelings in a pretty major way. I took this pic and sent it to my co-teacher to share with our students…I think it’s helpful for them to know that I actually use the tools that we teach them.

We have a tough time with routine, mundane tasks like brushing teeth. For now, gamifying it has been a fantastic strategy. I created 36 “tooth brush challenges,” and each morning they draw a new challenge. Fun fact: brushing one’s teeth while upside down is harder than it sounds.

Nothing like your partner going out of town to remind you how much we are ALL interdependent. Independence is a harmful myth. It’s harder (and more rewarding) to work towards effective, authentic, affirming interdependence.

While in Boston to speak about the work we’re doing with neurodivergent teens, we two public educators, currently on strike, stopped for a moment at the site of the first public school in America. I’m back in Portland today and holding the line because public schools matter.

Pro tip: when you’re at a conference and listening to presentations on your special interest, make sure to go with someone who can keep you from raising your hand and correcting/info-dumping during a speech.
*there is a time and a place to correct and engage, but as a speaker myself, I know that the middle of the presentation is not the time.*

A pre-Oregon Speech and Hearing Association. (OSHA) presentation pic. We spoke for an hour on our co-teaching model and co-created curriculum designed for neurodivergent teens. Working with is an honor, and I’m excited to do it again in person next month at ASHA 2023!

I don’t think I have what it takes to cut it in the graphic design biz, but I sure do have the chops to mess around on canvas when I’ve got other things to do.

Got some super tasters? We have been enjoying blind taste tests of different ‘flavored’ candy. One of them can taste the difference between m&m colors with 66% accuracy. They’re both 100% with skittles, poler water, and sour patch kids.
