Water flows down the side of the Green Weaver ski trail. To test the accuracy of our sensors, we measured the flow rate using a bin.

4.5 seconds to fill an 18-gallon bin = 240 GPM

The SnowPod is secured and installed! Lots of troubleshooting still to be done, but all of the pieces are in place.

After a snowmelt event, water will rush down the mountain for several days. Even after the temperatures have dropped again (snowmaking conditions), we estimate that this stream's flow could reach as high as 500 GPM.* Our SnowPod system will capture this water and redirect it to nearby snow guns. A method that will dramatically reduce the cost of making man-made snow since minimal pumping is required. Saddleback Mountain currently pumps water for its snow guns from Saddleback Lake, nearly 2.8 miles away.

*Based on data extrapolated from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest.

Installation of our weir occurred this morning. With the help of an excavator, we installed two large plates in the middle of the stream that runs along the Green Weaver ski trail. Snow covers the stream during the winter, but it flows continuously.

After a snowmelt event, our SnowPod prototype will divert the flowing water directly to nearby snow guns. This method dramatically cuts the cost of recoating the slopes since the ski resort isn't required to pump the water back up the mountain.

ReNewSnow's Science Hut! Located adjacent to the Green Weaver ski trail on Saddleback Mountain, the science hut will serve as the company's base of operations mid-mountain. The hut is primarily needed to house our pump, but it will also host additional equipment.

ReNewSnow visited the HKD Snowmaker’s factory in Quebec last month. In the photo is the airless, low-energy HKD Volt tower snow gun. The Volt is the model we’ll use on the slopes of Saddleback Mountain this winter to test our SnowPod.
