Happy Wednesday, Fencers!

I'm excited to announce (officially) that we will be once again holding open fencing this summer at the Portage Y. I've put together some information below, but please reach out if you have any questions.

WHEN: Thursdays from 6:30 - 8:30p, starting on 6/18 through 8/27
WHERE: Portage YMCA - Blue (middle) court
WHO: Open to anyone with fencing experience
WHAT: Open/drop-in fencing - there will be no formal instruction during this time. You just show up and fence whoever else shows up that day.
HOW: You can sign up through the Y's online registration page or by calling/visiting the Portage Y. One thing to note here: you do not have to sign up beforehand. You can come any day you want to fence and pay that day at the front desk. You can pre-pay for drop-in sessions, but you would need to reach out to the Y about how to handle a day you have already signed up for but cannot attend. Our recommendation is to just pay as you go, the day you are fencing.

We will be using the electric strips, so be sure to bring your glove and underarm protector (if you have one; if you do not, it would be an excellent time to invest in one). All the normal club gear we have will be available, just like in class.

We hope to see everyone there...at least once, maybe twice OR all summer!

Close event alert! The MI Division 2026 Epee championships are this weekend at West Michigan Fencing Academy. You can still register at the lower rate.

No idea why the link preview shows 2024, but registration closes on May 30 at 12:30pm, but if you register the day of or are a walk-in, I believe the cost doubles.

Happy Monday, Fencers!

We're just a short week away from our 2026 Kalamaduel club tournament, and I wanted to share some information with you prior to the event.

First, if you are still interested but have not signed up, you can! This Thursday is the last day to sign up, which you can do by calling/visiting the Portage YMCA or by using the online link below. We cannot accept any entries after Thursday, so jump on it if you want to participate.

Check-in opens at 9 AM, so please plan accordingly. We hope to have everyone checked in by 9:45. We cannot accept late check-ins. Once we start the event (at 9:45 am), we cannot work in late arrivals.

We don't have access to a printer at the Y, so real-time results will be posted to the FencingTimeLive website. We will have QR codes posted for quick access to the site. Due to a recent change by the FencingTimeLive organization, you now need a free account to access live results. The link is below for anyone who would like to create a free account before the event.

We are looking for volunteers who can get to the Portage Y shortly after 8 AM to help us set up. We will need assistance with setting up chairs and the strips (equipment, taping the outlines/cables/power/etc). Thank you in advance to anyone who can help us.

Lastly, family and friends are welcome and encouraged to attend. Just let the YMCA front desk know you are here for the fencing tournament. We will have a small number of chairs plus some bleachers available, although you are free to bring camping-style fold-up chairs as well. For the fencers, if you lose your DE bout, we strongly encourage you to stay and watch your clubmates who are still competing. You can learn a lot from watching others, plus it shows support for the club!

We're looking forward to another event this year!

Thanks to a very generous anonymous donation, we have the ability to cover the entry fees for a handful of participants in the upcoming Kalamaduel club tournament. This benefactor shares in our philosophy that money should never hinder someone's desire to progress in this sport.

If you would like to participate but were hesitating due to the entry fee, please reach out to us at [email protected].

We still have plenty of spots open in the tournament, so I highly encourage everyone to give it a shot and have some fun fencing for a day in an environment just a little more competitive than class.

Just a reminder that tonight is the last class of the current session. The next session starts next week, and registration is open, with a ton of space still available. You can sign up by calling or visiting the Portage YMCA branch or by using their online registration portal, linked below.

We also still have quite a few spots available for our club tournament, scheduled for May 16. I highly encourage everyone to participate, as it's a great way to get some competition experience in a low-pressure event, plus it's just really fun to get together and go out sometimes. You can sign up the same way as class. Below is a document outlining some info on the tournament.

Last thing to note: if you are in Level 1 and looking to move to Level 2, you will need to obtain a fencing glove. As mentioned in class, you can either purchase on your own or through the club. If you wish to purchase through the club, please look at the linked order form and bring one to class tonight. No payment is needed now; we'll collect when the gear is delivered. We'll have a handful of paper copies of the form in class tonight as well. I'd like to get all of these back today so I can order and have everything in hand by the start of the new session next week.

If you are in Level 2 and looking to move to Level 3, the same thing applies for an underarm protector (also called a plastron). You can use the same order form to place an order through the club.

I happy to share that our first ever club warm up jacket is now live in our online store. Speaking of, did you know we have an online store? We don't promote it well but we do have a handful of items you can buy to show off your club, including these sweet new warm up jackets!
