Wrestling legend Dan Gable famously said, “once you’ve wrestled, everything else in life is easy.” Wrestlers regularly share the sentiment that the sport provides excellent foundational skills to prepare people for future success in life.

Wrestling Elevates Academics and Provides College Opportunities: The discipline required to participate in wrestling is often cited as a reason that high school wrestlers go on to have success in high school coursework and advance to college. An NCAA study showed that wrestling has one of the highest percentages of first-generation college students among all collegiate sports.

Wrestling Builds Valuable Physical Skills: In addition to preparing kids for future opportunities in life, wrestling also teaches valuable physical discipline. Wrestling training also develops skills that can translate to other sports outside of wrestling. Former wrestlers are regularly seen making big impacts on lacrosse and football fields, and in other athletic arenas.

Wrestling Is For All People:
A great reason to join a wrestling team is that all people can wrestle. It’s a sport for boys and girls of all sizes and body types. Wrestling is contested in weight classes. In many sports, an athlete’s size can create significant advantages or disadvantages, but at the high school level, wrestlers can compete against people their own size in weight classes.

CONGRATULATIONS COACH SCHETTINO!

We’re proud to share that Coach Anthony Schettino has been selected by the National Wrestling Coaches Association as the 2025 Battles Won State Coach of the Year-presented by the United States Marine Corps.

This prestigious honor is awarded to a high school coach who best demonstrates a genuine commitment to the personal and professional development of their student-athletes, as well as a dedication to their own continuous growth.

Coach Schettino lives this mission daily, mentoring through a whole-athlete approach, investing time and care into every athlete’s journey, and making life-changing contributions that go far beyond the mat.

A true leader. A life-changer. A well-deserved honor.

Current and former Vikings competed at the 2025 NUWAY Summer Nationals in Atlantic City.

Summer Nationals is a premier event that attracts top talent from across the country, providing a stage to compete against elite wrestlers at the highest level.

In the open division, former Viking Antonio Intintoli (WNE College) earned double All‑America honors (4th Folkstyle, 2nd Freestyle) and teammate Abby Alicandro (WNE College) swept every match by fall or tech fall to claim a prestigious Open Freestyle National Championship!

In the high school division, Dante Salerno was named team Outstanding Wrestler with a 4–2 record, falling to the eventual fourth‑place All‑American late in the wrestle‑back rounds. Jivan Nakashian opened strong with two wins, including a first‑period pin over an eventual All‑American, before a narrow loss to another All‑American wrestler. Jacob Tan, Anthony Coccarelli, Peter Drouzas, Carlos Quintana, all notched wins and gained invaluable experience. Sophomore Mason Salerno and freshman Matt Meraz made big statements, battling some of the nation’s best and laying the groundwork for other young Viking wrestlers.

Continue to put in the time and effort, the best is ahead!!
