Cornell lacrosse will face Johns Hopkins in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday — the first time these two storied programs have met in the playoffs since the 1987 National Championship game, when Hopkins defeated Cornell.

Back in ’87, Tim Goldstein suited up for Cornell. On Saturday, it’ll be his son Ryan Goldstein taking the field for the Big Red.

Can Ryan help Cornell rewrite history and avenge the heartbreak from 1987? Feels like a pretty special full-circle moment for the Goldstein family and college lacrosse.

I think this one is going to be an absolute battle. Hopkins has the championship pedigree, but Cornell’s offense can score with anyone in the country. Wouldn’t be surprised if Ryan Goldstein ends up playing a huge role in a classic tournament game.

How many players can you name in this championship photo of LILC 1998? It was a completion of a three peat in defeating NYAC in the final after one of the great games of all time in the semifinal defeating archrival team Toyota in the semifinal with one second to go after being down 8-0. The great John Phillips assisted coach Ed Hughes to complete the 3 peat for the 90s. LILC had a 3 peat in the 80s and also a 4 peat at the end of the 60s into the 70s. Club was the professional lacrosse prior to the MLL starting in 2001. Long Island one titles in five different decades. Total dominance, and it was due to the leadership of the club, which was carried from more Hall of Famer than you can even mention in a post. Fun tidbit we used to the song playing when we did win those titles and we were most times the underdog!!!

There would be no Long Island Lacrosse Club without John Phillips. He carried the mantle for over 50 years incredibly giving players an opportunity to play and compete in the game we love. John treated the player at the end of the bench with as much respect as the pro or World team player. He was happy in the background while the teams and players successes accumulated. He was always prepared and organized, and Long Island Lacrosse Clubs 18 Championships could not have been possible without John Phillips. God Bless Sallie who was by his side supporting John and our missions in this game we love. John will be missed but his impact will go on for many generations by the players he coached managed and played with. RIP John, nobody did it better!

Tom Postel and many other Hall of Famers graced the fields for the Most Iconic Club Lacrosse team who won 🏆 18 National Championships. It is with a great deal of sadness that I let everyone know of the passing of John Phillips. As many know there really is no person more identified with the LILC then John Phillips. He was the rock of stability that bridged numerous generations for the club. A absolute legend of the game from club to team USA, John was a reason the of the advancement for lacrosse for 50 years. He will be surely missed. RIP John, thank you 🙏 for everything you have done for us.
