“Try it again” is more helpful when a child knows what to change.

At CMA, we break skills into manageable steps, give a clear correction, and let students practice.

A stronger stance. Better balance. A more controlled movement.

Each improvement gives a student something real to build on.

That is why we make time for the next attempt. 🥋

When you visit a martial arts school, watch what happens when a child needs help.

Does the instructor explain the next step clearly?
Does the child get a chance to practice the correction?
Are expectations clear, with encouragement along the way?

These are useful things to notice when you are choosing a place for your child to learn.

At CMA, we want families to understand how we teach and feel comfortable asking questions.

We put together a parent guide to choosing a martial arts school.
Take a look before you make your decision:

A child does not have to feel confident before taking the first step. 🥋

Sometimes that first step is walking onto the mat.
Sometimes it is asking for help.
Sometimes it is trying a technique again after a correction.

At Championship Martial Arts of Port Washington, we help students find one thing they can improve, practice it, and recognize the progress they make.

With belt testing coming up this Friday, we are celebrating the work that happens before a new belt: showing up, listening, practicing, and learning to keep going.

Those small steps deserve recognition.

When you’re choosing an activity for your child, watch what happens when a student needs help.

Does the instructor explain it another way?

Do they give the student something specific to practice?

Is there encouragement along with a clear expectation?

Those are things we work to bring to our classes at Championship Martial Arts of Port Washington.

Learning takes practice. We want students to have clear guidance and someone in their corner while they work on the next step.

If you’d like to learn how we would help your child get started, send us a message.

Your child can come to class with questions.

They can need another demonstration.

They can take time to understand a new movement.

That is part of learning, and our job is to teach them through it!

At CMA, we want students to hear a clear instruction, get useful feedback, and know they can ask for help.

We also ask them to put in effort, treat others respectfully, and take the next step when they’re ready.

That combination of support and expectations matters to us.

If your child is learning something difficult right now, remind them:
“You can ask for help and keep practicing.”

“Get ready” can mean a lot of different things to a child.

Put on your shoes.
Find your bag.
Fill your water bottle.
Get to the door.

Sometimes a clearer first step gives them a better place to begin.

Try starting with one specific direction: “Please put your shoes by the door.”

Once that’s done, move to the next step. As your child learns the routine, give them opportunities to do more of it independently.

When they follow through, tell them what you noticed: “You packed your bag and put it where it belongs. You’re ready for tomorrow.”

Choose one routine this weekend and make the first step specific.

One clear correction gives a student something they can work on.

“Bring your hands back to your guard.”

That’s specific. They can try it, feel the difference, and practice again.

At CMA, we work to make the next step understandable. Students need room to ask questions, make adjustments, and keep learning.

Try this cue when your child feels overwhelmed: “Let’s work on one thing first.”

“I can’t do it!” 😫

That’s a moment to coach.

When a child gets frustrated, we can help them find a manageable next step:

1️⃣ Pause.
2️⃣ Take a breath.
3️⃣ Choose one thing to work on.
4️⃣ Try again, with help if needed.

On the mat, that might mean practicing just the first part of a combination before putting it all together.

At home, it might mean starting with one problem or asking someone to explain the directions again.

The goal is to give them something useful to do when they feel stuck.

Save this little reset for a day when your child needs it.

(We adults can practice it too...)

The new backpack is exciting. 🎒
Remembering what goes in it every night takes practice. 🙂

As school routines settle in, this is where the everyday work begins.

✔️Getting ready.
✔️Listening to the directions.
✔️Starting the task.
✔️Finishing what you started.

At CMA, we give students opportunities to practice that same follow-through: get into position, listen to the instruction, work on the technique, and make an adjustment when needed.

Some days it comes easily. Other days they need a reminder and a smaller first step.

We keep the expectation clear and help them take that next step. 👣

For home this week, choose one routine your child can practice. Keep it simple enough that they know what “done” looks like.

✔️Shoes by the door.
✔️Backpack packed.
✔️One job completed before moving to the next.

If you’re looking for a structured, encouraging activity for your child this school year, message us about getting started at Championship Martial Arts of Port Washington.

Back-to-school season brings plenty of reminders to “pay attention.”

But focus is not something children automatically know how to do. It is a skill they need to practice.

At CMA, we break focus into four simple parts:

👀 Focus Eyes: Look at who is speaking.

👂 Focus Ears: Listen to what is being said.

🥋 Focus Body: Stay still and under control.

🧠 Focus Mind: Think about what you are doing right now.

Students practice these skills every class until focus becomes something they know how to use at home, at school, and everywhere else.
