Here we are talking about some of the best options for wedge shafts that we fit a lot of people into. Of course, the best wedge shaft is the one you fit into. But these are shafts that many players fit into and seem to like best. Let us know what shafts you play in your wedges and why.

Swing weight is not as important as a lot of golfers may think. When getting fit for clubs, swing weight rarely comes up because we are focusing on results and finding a head/shaft/grip combo that best fits your swing. If you fit into a C8 swing weight for a given combination, so be it, as long as the results are what you want to achieve. Swing weight is only important, in my opinion, in the build process. I make sure your irons' swing weights match across the set and that there are no outliers, so you have a consistent feel from club to club. I recommend letting the fit decide your swing weight, not the other way around.

What should the lie angle be of all of your clubs? If you got a fitting with a 7 or 6 iron and were fit 2 degrees upright from standard, should all of your clubs be 2 degrees upright from standard? For most golfers with regular swing speeds and up, the answer is no. This is subjective and different for every player, and also based on shaft weight. What most of my builds and elite players' builds have is a typically flatter lie in their wedges. The reason is deflection. At impact, the shaft bows slightly downward (toe down), which affects your dynamic lie angle. When you get to the shorter clubs, they deflect less because of lower swing speeds. The usual rule is to make your wedges 1 degree flatter than your irons. So in most builds, if the golfer fits into a 2-degree upright lie angle, if I’m doing their wedges and specifically scoring wedges, I’ll put them at 1 degree upright from standard and go from there. A question I get a lot when doing iron fittings is what shafts should I put in my wedges? There are different schools of thought on this, but ultimately it comes down to the player's preference and what feels best to them. Most better players prefer a slightly heavier shaft in their wedges, so they’ll be able to flight them down more easily, and also soften the flex so they can feel the head. When you’re hitting full shots with your wedges or your a higher handicap golfer, or even a beginner, I recommend the same shafts all the way across the set. Let me know your thoughts on this in the comments and if you have any questions. I can tell you what I see in the results from the launch monitor, especially when golfers hit those 30- to 80-yard shots with the wedges.

The most popular question: How can I get more distance? There are many variables in getting distance, but the primary changes I can make are: 1. Lightening up the club with usually the shaft and 2. Going to a lighter flex. Fred Couples famously used a ladies' driver for his three wood and would hit it well over 300 yards in the 90s. As long as you can keep it in the fairway for that lighter flex, even if you are a higher swing player. You will probably sacrifice dispersion or accuracy, but you should get that precious distance you are looking for.

When buying clubs, it is always wise to try before you buy. Direct-to-consumer brands are becoming very popular for good reason. They are made well at a good price. The drawback is that you can’t demo them or get a true fitting for them before buying. One brand, , offers direct-to-consumer service and also works with clubfitters like me to get you the best fit and results for your game. Not only can you try them out, but you can also try pretty much any shaft and head combination to make sure you get the proper fit the first time. Next time you consider direct-to-consumer, consider SUB 70 or another brand where you can get a proper fitting, not an online one.

Are you in between flexes? There is an easy way to help you decide which direction to go. There are a lot of other things to consider, such as weight and profile. However, if you are buying clubs and you have a pretty good idea of what your specs are but you seem to be stuck in between flexes, hopefully this helps steer you in the right direction.

Most golfers play a longer shaft than they should.
