Trips to Port O’Connor began in the early 80’s.... We were hooked. Mom and Dad (pictured above- James Sr. and Suzanne) purchased our first POC home in the mid 80’s. Every single weekend and holidays were spent in the small one bedroom shack. We loved it! Dad started bay guiding on the weekends beginning in a Bay Hawk then progressing to a Haynie H20 later on. The more time we spent on the water the more we wanted to go to the next level. Before we knew it, a 25’ Mako was in the works followed by a 32’ Sea Craft... 39 Midnight Express... 40’ Sea Hunter. We progressed so quickly. It was an addiction. Mom kept us fed and alive! Taught us knew fishing knots that we still use today! We began guiding offshore while I was in High School and during my time studying at Texas A&M and Sister (Natasha) at University of Texas. Mom and Dad carried their regular professions working their tail off to give us this luxury in Logistics and Legal within Victoria. The Back Bays of POC and the deep blue water had us wrapped around its finger.... We were so blessed.
We continued carrying on with our careers. I (James III) was a Maritime Freight Broker importing/exporting chemicals internationally from 2006 to 2018. Natasha is still pursuing her career as a Senior Event coordinator. ( Fun fact - she started the POC Crawfish Festival!) In the meantime Mom and Dad semi retired and moved to POC, while we continued guiding.
During these guiding days Dad acquired a Boat and Motor Sales position in POC. During this time is when we thankfully stumbled across Mr. Richard while he was looking for a private Captain. Dad has his 100 ton license so it was a perfect fit to manage the armada of boats including his bay boats to his sport fishing yacht.
As time went on, I was more involved on the weekends/days off. Increased my sea time. Increased my experience by learning from Dad. Soon there was an opportunity... That opportunity became Jeco’s Marine & Tackle...
