A Morning in New Smyrna Beach

There’s something special about starting the day on the water with an old friend. On this trip, I teamed up with Aaron Dill, a local New Smyrna Beach angler I’ve known for nearly 20 years. The morning started off chilly with temperatures in the upper 40s, but we knew it was shaping up to be a beautiful day on the water.

Aaron had been dialed in on the fish, and I was excited to see what the day had in store. Between the possibility of sight fishing redfish and trout and spending time in one of my favorite places to fish, there was plenty to look forward to.

A Well-Fed Mangrove

You can tell a lot about a fish by looking at it, and this mangrove snapper had one thing going for it—a serious belly! That fish had clearly been eating well and was packed full from feeding hard offshore.

Catching quality snapper like this is always a good sign that you're around healthy fish and plenty of bait. Safe to say this one wasn't missing any meals!

The Search for the Right Bait

Before the fishing really gets started, it’s all about finding the right bait. On this trip, we were focused on locating cigar minnows—our go-to choice for larger fish offshore. The smaller baits make great chum, but when it’s time to target quality fish, having the right offering can make all the difference.

With a little west wind in our face and the boat settling into position, it was time to see what the day had in store. Sometimes the setup is just as important as the catch.

When Everything Comes Together

Some trips take a while to put together, and this was one of them. We had been talking about getting offshore for quite some time, but as every angler knows, the weather always gets a vote. This time, everything finally lined up.

With calm seas, clear conditions, and a forecast that couldn’t have looked much better, it was the perfect opportunity to make the run and see what was waiting offshore. Days like these are why you stay flexible and keep an eye on the weather window.

When the Screen Lights Up

There’s nothing like pulling up on a spot and seeing it come alive. Bait everywhere, fish showing themselves on the surface, and then suddenly a whole school of mangrove snapper appears right in front of the boat. Moments like that get the adrenaline pumping in a hurry!

When everything starts lining up, you know it’s time to get a bait in the water and get to work.

Crystal Clear and Ready to Work

Looking back at this offshore trip, the water was so clear I felt like I could see 30 to 40 feet down. Everywhere I looked there was life—huge barracuda cruising the surface, almaco jacks hanging around the structure, and snapper showing up on the screen as we drifted overhead.

When you pull up to a spot and see that much activity, there's only one thing left to do: get to work. Days like this are what keep me coming back offshore.
