What's in a shoe??
Most of us assume that the more cushion and support our shoes have, the better they are for our feet. After all, they feel comfortable the moment we slip them on. But here’s the truth: what feels good in the short term can sometimes work against you in the long run.
Modern shoes often have:
- Thick cushioning that reduces your feet’s ability to feel the ground.
- Narrow toe boxes that squeeze your toes and limit natural spread.
- Rigid soles that restrict natural movement of your foot joints.
The result?
Over time, your foot muscles weaken, your arches become less resilient, and your balance suffers — often without you realizing it. Weak feet can force your knees, hips, and lower back to pick up the slack, leading to movement compensations and, eventually, discomfort or injury.
In the Integrative Movement System, we look at your footwear as part of the bigger picture. Shoes can either help restore function or hide dysfunction — and most people are living with the latter. That’s why, in THERMALFLEX29, we assess your footwear choices, teach you how to transition to healthier options, and pair that with targeted foot-strengthening exercises so you can adapt safely.
The goal isn’t to throw away your favorite sneakers tomorrow — it’s to gradually restore the strength and mobility your feet were designed to have, so that any shoe you wear becomes a tool, not a crutch.
Your feet are your foundation. Treat them well, and you give your entire body a stronger, more stable base to move from, as well as new found mobility from your feet up all the way up to your neck.
