On this day, November 13th, 1936

The Tug Fred Lee foundered in Lake Huron. Prior to the sinking the tug was aground off of Harbor Beach. Once freeing itself, the Fred Lee headed north for winter layup. A down-bound stone carrier (Munson) was 15 miles north of Pointe Aux Barques in rough seas. The watchman onboard the Munson could see the Fred Lee and in one instant saw a flash and the Fred Lee was gone. When the Munson arrived on scene there were no survivors and only a small amount of debris on the surface.

The video is a segment from our documentary "Flashback: A Fresh Look and some Treasures from the Past!". The Fred Lee is in 197ft of water in the Thumb Are Bottomland Preserve of Lake Huron.

The Forgotten Souls of 1913

There are many sad and tragic stories from the Great Storm of 1913. The storm left incredible carnage across all the Great Lakes. Lake Huron took the greatest toll when it came to the shipping industry with the sinking of eight giant steamers.

Some of the ships from this tragedy were recently discovered or remain to be discovered. Several of them have been extensively documented and are popular dive sites today. But a few were discovered many years ago and lie on the lake floor, in deep water, with the ships and their stories largely forgotten.

Join us as we visit two of these forgotten steamers, the Argus and the John McGean, and explore the breathtaking toll that Mother Nature inflicted on these two massive ships, during the greatest storm to ever hit the Great Lakes!

October 29th, 1924 the steel freighter Glenorchy collided with the Leonard B. Miller in heavy fog on Lake Huron about 6 miles off of of Harbor Beach Michigan. After the impact the Miller came alongside the Glenorchy to take on the crew of the sinking ship. One story from the sinking is that one of the crew members was trapped in his stateroom after the collision. Captain Burke of the Glenorchy realized this as the crew was being transferred to the Miller. Captain Burke then when to the stateroom and used an axe to chop his way into the stateroom and rescue the trapped crewman. Moments after Captain Burke and the crewmen stepped on the deck of the Miller, the Glenorchy turned to its port side, then rolled over and sand to the bottom.

After taking on all 20 crew members, the Miller returned to Port Huron with a badly damaged bow and a large hole in its port side. It was reported that the pumps were barely able to keep up with the incoming water from the damage.

152 years ago (August 13th, 1868) the Dunderberg sunk in Lake Huron off of Harbor Beach Michigan.

The Dunderberg is probably the most visited technical diving wreck in the Thumb Bottomland Preserve. The Dunderberg was lost in a collision on August 13th, 1868. The Dunderberg is in amazing condition and sitting upright on the bottom in 155 feet of water. The bow sprit is adorn with a figurehead and the holds still contain its cargo of grain. Along the starboard side, you can see the deep gash cut into the hull from the collision in 1868.
