Shugotenshi Dojo

Shugotenshi Dojo This is the Hombu dojo page of the Shugotenshi Dojo of Japanese Martial Arts. This type of training is not for everyone.

Originally opened by Jason Chambers in Baton Rouge in 1994, the Shugotenshi Dojo has been one of the only sources in the state of Louisiana for training in the traditional Japanese martial arts old ancient Japan. We are the only dojo that offers training in the Takamatsuden martial arts in the traditional manner taught only by a few instructors in the United States. Additionally, we offer study of

Japanese weaponry of the samurai age, to include the katana (sword), rokushakubo (staff), kusarifundo (weighted chain), shuriken (throwing blades) and many others. The Shugotenshi Dojo has always prided itself on being the only dojo in the area that trains in the outdoors. We believe that training in nature is beneficial to all students as it teaches them to adapt their learning to environments they may find themselves in more often than being in a building with a padded floor. Training in the elements also teaches the student lessons in patience and endurance with having to deal with some of the "discomforts of nature". It is for this reason that we ask that potential students consider this before applying for admission.

The 2016 Flood of the Baton Rouge area was a terrible and tragic event for us all.  Many people, including public safety personnel lost everything they owned... homes included. Five of our own lost homes and valuables and are no displaced as a result. It is my effort, as being an Animal Control...

In '94, I toyed with the idea of opening a dojo in downtown Baton Rouge. Since then, I have watched as the area has grown tremendously. One thing remains constant... there is no martial arts school of any sort there.
