Ditch Bird Wheels

Ditch Bird Wheels Louisiana Built, Mountain tested, Killer approved. Our name, Ditch Bird, pays homage to the American 'Great Egret'.

Ditch Bird builds the toughest and most capable off-road electric bikes for Hunters, Fishermen, and anyone needing to traverse the most treacherous, steep, and gnarly terrain. It humbly owns its less than dignified reputation by not claiming to be anything fancy as it wades through our litter filled roadside ditches. However, make no mistake, the Great Egret is one of the most stealthy, efficient,

and calculated beasts of prey. At Ditch Bird, we find honor and integrity in the Egret's modest but undeniable expertise. Similarly, our mission is to keep things simple and remain humble, but be unwaveringly proficient at the job.

Fresh paint calls for magic hour glamour shots!

We've done AWD models in the past, but this is a new front hub motor and fork design we've worked on for a while. This one has the super quiet HD motor and 'di**le' that can go 14 or 19mph AND climb a wall, then a front hub motor can take it up to 35mph. NOW, y'all ain't got NO dang business going that fast in the woods! BUT if you needed to run from the law or something, it's there! 🤷🏃‍➡️🚴🚔👮

disclaimer: don't do that ☝️

The main upgrade we made on the fork is a steel insert embedded into the aluminum fork so its steel where the torque is applied, while keeping the lighter weight of an aluminum fork. This, along with a second steel torque arm, make a suspension fork capable of handling the abuse of hub motor.

The front motor is a based off the standard G series commonly used, but spec'd with 4.6:1 gearing and less copper turns for higher RPM.

A limited 15 unit run of these will start at $4,995, outfitted like the Triple 7 aside from front wheel, although there's a few things we recommend you add that really make this bike sweet....

This one is outfitted with Onyx Racing Products silent hub, Magura MT5e brakes, Molle attachment, C9 saddle, front rack, and it's set up with Terrene Tires tubeless 'Cake Eaters' to run low psi if desired, help prevent punctures, and make repair easier if it happens.

This limited run will go fast (pun intended)!... Message us for more details!

I told that dude to stop parking in my employee of the month spot!!

We were told there wouldn't be much in the way of hills around the Ohio Mobile Hunters EXPO this weekend so we gotta think outside da box for torque demonstrations!

Will you ever need to pull a hatchback with your ebike? No....should you try? Definitely not.....BUUTTT, on a Ditch Bird, should the hatchback towing mood strike ya..you good to go! 😂😎😎

Come check us out at the expo in Wilmington, Ohio this weekend. Bikes will be there to test ride and we'll have some new tech to show. Unfortunately, I don't think the venue wants anyone towing automobiles indoors, but we'll figure something else out. 😂

Pretty sure we had all 4 wheels when we left 🛞🛞🤷🤷. Minor setback on the way to the Mobile Hunters EXPO in Dalton, GA. But that's not gonna stop a Ditch Bird! We'll be hanging out with our friends at the Mobilehuntinggear booth and Bryan's gonna show us some of the ways he uses his creations on the bikes to maximize efficiency hauling any and all hunting gear. From the tailgate to the treetop!

Shout out to PX Tire Center in Lumberton MS for getting the ol girl back on the road bright and early!

Years ago, when just building ebikes for hunting buddies out of my garage and we'd talk shop, I'd often mention that a lot of hunters would really be better off with a step through style frame, to which the reply was mostly "wait, you mean like a girl bike??".. Yes, lol, like a girl bike. Anyhow, lo and behold, in the years to follow companies caught on and they've gained in popularity.

So, naturally, when starting Ditch Bird Wheels I planned to do a step through frame. Initially, the plan was to do a standard style frame first, but it quickly became clear the step through was what most hunters wanted. So for the last year and a half, this is what we've been working towards.

Introducing, the 'Close Contours' frame. Why the name? Because from this frame, we will build hunting bikes that will tackle any topo map, even the ones where the contour lines get so close they start to blur together.

When we've talked about multiple upcoming models, they are all variants built on this frame. What's different about it? Well, it may appear similar to many frames out there because we used a standard downtube/battery compartment, but outside of that its entirely our design.

A main goal when designing this frame was to make certain it was versatile...to keep it so that one frame could be a ton of different bikes, for a ton of different hunter's needs. This frame can be a hub drive, dual hub drive, mid/AWD, and can accommodate a ton of different mid drive motors, and a ton of different state/fed regulations. It can be built to fit someone short, tall, old, young..to traverse a crawfish pond or climb a mountain, and everything in between.

Another huge benefit is the frame geometry. Without getting too technical, other bikes we've seen miss the mark on what would best suit a hunting bike. This bike will be more stable and balanced, have lower stepover height without compromising ground clearance, handle hills and tow better, and carry cargo more efficiently, among other things.

We designed and CNC'd the rear triangle yokes and rear dropouts for a super tough frame that's able to handle the high torque of our motors, all while cutting weight elsewhere to make a lighter frame.

The Close Contours frame has undergone fatigue and stress testing that simulate years of tough riding and has passed both ISO 4210 and EN 15194 safety standards with flying colors.

We cant wait to share with you some of the builds on this frame!

In Louisiana, it ain't just hunting season we put our bikes to work! Hauling bucks in the fall and crawfish in the spring....No offseason for a Ditch Bird! On this day we MIGHT have misjudged water level a tiny lil bit. The bikes are pretty dang water tight, but I wouldn't quite make a habit of this! Still, it was a fun torture test!

We build bikes capable of climbing any hill, but towing half submerged sacks of crawfish through 1-2 ft of water is a pretty dang good torque test too. NO PEDALS TURNT!

We're still here! We haven't posted anything in a while due to being hard at work finalizing new models for this hunting season.

We knew the hunting e-bike market would respond to a company doing honestly built and honestly priced bikes, but we weren't prepared for just how much it would respond. So, we stepped back, regrouped, and switched course a bit to be able to bring the best hunting bikes to the masses...the right way.

We also put our sticker on a new door! We are in a new shop and now have the help and room to truly change the hunting e-bike game. Proudly designed and built by hand in Louisiana.....bikes born in the sloughs, ready for the summits!!

Introducing the best hunting ebike hub ever made. Tougher than anything out there and capable of handling the insane torque of our motors, instant engagement for an incredible ride,...oh, and it's dead silent. No more clicks warning your quarry you're there, and nothing keeping you from hearing that 600 yard gobble.

We partnered with Onyx Racing Products to create the ultimate hunting bike hub. Minnesota based Onyx is another of the many American companies that make up our hunting ebikes, made by hand in Louisiana. You're going to want this, trust us.

When you're in South Louisiana but you build bikes to be able to climb mountains, you gotta improvise when testing. We told our employee to run W's up and down the levee til the bike gave out. Last we heard he made it to the gulf, pawned the bike, and runs an illegal casino out a pontoon boat in the marsh. We wish him well. Anyhow, the levee is 30% grade over 100 ft on one side and a little steeper on the other, making it a formidable hill and we dont sell bikes that struggle once. No pedals turnt!

We think belts are great in a lot of ways. Low maintenance, quiet, lightweight, etc. We occasionally use them and will continue to. HOWEVER, where they don't shine...tensile strength. If you're interested in the most durable drive train, tensile strength is a KEY ingredient, and on an e-bike, chains far outperform belts.

Belts are often sold as a premium offering on high priced e-bikes. Marketed as a 'must have' feature if you want high end. But we don't get into gimmicks at Ditch Bird, or choose components that aren't the best tool for the job. And with the torque that our mid drive motors put out, belts are often not the right choice.

Gates CDX belts are rated for 100Nm and we see them being used with motors capable of delivering nearly twice that. That said, Gates Engineers will occasionally approve belts for higher loads at times, but only when very specific tooth count and tension parameters are met. Do you trust your bike built entirely on the other side of the globe to meet those requirements? Did it stay nice and cozy in the hot sea-can for 30 days on the ship ride over?

We aren't trying to scare people that already have belts drives, or want to get one. They are great at times and most that are out there now will probably never give you any trouble. But as these motors get more and more powerful, particularly in low gearing/hill climbing ratios, don't be surprised if we start seeing problems.

Anyhow, just don't be sold on the gimmicks. Absolutely get a belt drive when it calls for it. We do the research on every aspect of our bikes and know every bit of technical data on every component. Ask us about the heat treatment process of our frame, how many copper windings are in our motors, or the ampacity of the copper in our hand built batteries. Nothing is put on our bikes that isn't unwaveringly proficient at its job.

We will organize pricing better ASAP bur heres some details on the kit ingredients. Being that this is a new concept and different bikes may need slightly different parts, pricing may move slightly but this is what it looks like:

---'Everything to electrify' box, and support - $1195---

Bafang BBSHD 1000w (1600w peak) kits, Eggrider V2 display, half-twist throttle, upgraded Lekkie install hardware, 44 piece bike toolkit, 52v Samsung 20ah battery (custom built), Every detail figured out for you. Dont worry about what your bottom bracket width is or, how many spacers you need, or what dang amperage BMS do I need??....take a breath...its all taken care of, and we'll walk you through it. We also have a smaller Bafang motor (bbs02) for 750w restricted areas but can also program the BBSHD to be able to toggle between legal and not legal via your phone.

---'Screw the derailleur' box, and support - $350---

The exact ingredients to ditch the derailleur and replace it with an incredibly robust single speed drive train which may vary between bikes, but all you need to know is...you're gonna want it. Some of the things we use...Lekkie Bling Rings, White Industries Clutches, Custom German made cogs, Shadow Conspiracy chains. We know your chainline, we know what tensioner and spacers you need, and its in da box.

---Brakes - $75 ---

We wont force you to buy them... actually, yes, buy them. You are going to need stopping power, trust me. Star Union 4 piston brakes, 203mm rotors, and necessary adapters.

---Suspension Fork/Headset - $150 ---

100mm travel adjustable air suspension with lockout in black or gold and sealed bearing headset while you're in there

--Mullet Tires - $95 ---

No its not just cause we think it looks cool. I could discuss axle path, force vector, and scrub radius, but lets just say their is solid science on why this is more efficient. In short...business up front, party in the back (you're welcome to get 2 of the same tires if you think all that is BS) CST Toboggan, Roly Poly, BFT, Patrol, 45 north

--Rear racks - $55 Axiom Fatliner or $95 Wren OneRack

--Fenders - $10 Simple and basic poly or ABS mud gurards work best

We have upgraded stems, handlebars, Tannus Armour (highly recommend), seat posts, lights. but the above covers all the things to take a box store bike and make it an extremely nice hunting e-bike. We also have the high end versions of all of these parts from our partners like Cane Creek, Wolf Tooth, Magura, Hayes, Manitou, Wren, Works Components, and tons more, BUT the idea with these kits was to give you the opportunity to have a very solid rig on a budget.

The bike pictured started as a Dynacraft Krusher from Walmart ($298) but we only kept the frame and rims. It came out to about $2k to build counting everything including the spray paint

Some common and budget friendly fat bikes that work great and are:

-Dynacraft Krusher (horizontal dropouts are a big plus)

-Most Mongoose fat bikes including Juneau, Malus, Dolomite (steel or ALX), Argus (STX or Trail)

-Bass Pro/ Cabelas Ascend Moher

A lot of these are very commonly sold for cheap on FB Marketplace, and because you can easily upgrade all the parts that matter with these kits, You dont need to focus on condition as much.
