We put on 130 miles LAST WEEKEND starting in McGregor, MN and heading down towards Mille Lacs Lake. Stoped at the LakeView Inn on Dam Lake which always seems to do a great job and got gas in Glenn, MN. Overall we had a great early season ride with trail conditions varying from poor to good. We cleared some brush along some stretches of trail for Tamarack Sno-Flyers and Mille Lacs Trails Inc. until we ran out of daylight. Cutting 6” trees with a hand saw gets tiring after a while!!

Many times we found ourselves saying it was a great start to the season and that we would take the trail conditions we encountered compared to Saturday nights after heavy traffic for the rest of the year. Well, we all know what happened this week with the weather and the trails in central MN are not like they were just a week ago. Stay tuned, and hope for more snow!!

Trails look to be rideable in Poplar, WI. 30 minutes from Duluth. Couple trailers at some of the parking lots and looks like some of the local clubs have made some passes. Snow is better the further into the northern WI snowbelts you get. MN side of things could use a bit more snow and UP is still recovering from 30-40 inches last week. The season is here, and let’s hope it’s a good one. This is a great start.

‼️Late season snow update‼️ The numbers are in, and some of the winners from the snowfall this weekend are as follows:

1. 16.5 inches 1 mile WNW Houghton, MI
2. 12.7 inches Painesdale, MI
3. 10.7 Hovland, MN

All three areas are reporting decent snowmobiling today. Groomers are even rolling in the northern half of the Keewenaw. I also saw pictures from Grand Portage, MN- and it looked like awesome fresh snow riding. Once again- it’s not over until it’s over. Most trails across MI, WI, and MN close April 1st.

From 2 weeks ago: Porcupine Mountains backcountry exploring.

I ventured out to Bergland, MI on March 8th and did some exploring. Some knew of this and have messaged asking where the update was. Well, life gets busy but I figured better late then never. The goal of this was not a high mileage trip but rather to take it easy and try explore some areas I never have before. All was done in a legal fashion and considering the weather was great, snow was good, there was little sled traffic, and I was fortunate to have made it back safely, it was a great day snowmobiling.

Snow in Bergland was thin. The snow in the porkies was deep, and I mean DEEP. I’m over 6 feet tall and there was one instance when I hopped off to take a picture and quickly found my shoulder near the running board of my sled. Rocks, elevation change, pocket of air, drifting- who knows, but I wouldn’t be suprised to hear if there was 6 feet of snow on the ground somewhere up there. The berm on side of the trail from the groomer in picture #1 speaks for itself.

I had a great time- I covered 113 miles and was able to connect the dots on some trails- old and new, as well as some paths I’ve seen others take in the past. I’d say my time was split 50/50 between groomed trails and not, and it was a lot of fun.

Since then- I’m hearing things really deteriorated, HOWEVER- there was locations in the Western UP that picked up 10-12 inches of snow between yesterday (3/23) and today (3/24). I’m even reading from some that there’s good riding to be had. It’s not over until it’s over!!

Gunflint Trail Report from 2/28/25:
Made a trip up to Skyport Lodge yesterday. Rode phenomenal trails all the way to Gunflint Lake and back. The Gunflint trail, Expressway trail, and most everything else in between was in great shape. 4-6” of fresh heavy snow depending on where you were. It was still snowing when I left. Fire roads were also good. Snowmobile traffic was very light compared to what I thought it be, although it was a Friday, and people may not have arrived yet. Special thanks for Cook County Snowmobile Club-Ridge Riders, Skyport Lodge & Raven Rock Grill, and Gunflint Lodge and Outfitters.

Made a trip to the Keweenaw Peninsula 2/19-2/22. Put on almost 400 miles and the trails were great. Covered almost every trail north of Houghton. As always, Brockway Mountain and High Rock Bay were highlights. Special shoutout to the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club, The Mariner North, and The Mosquito Inn.

Big Sandy Lake, MN Update from Sunday (2/9). Rode around the lake down around Lake Minnewawa and cut back north on the flowage. Hoped on some trails near Willeys, MN National Golf Course, and briefly up around Savanna Portage State Park. The moral of the story is Aitkin County needs more snow. It sounds like maybe a couple inches of new snow could come tonight. Until another 6-12 inches is had I would label the trails as not in good shape with the exception of a few spots that were decent for short stretches. Nevertheless fun to get some miles on in this area.

Lake Vermilion Update from Saturday (2/8)- Rode from Lake Vermilion to the VRT and back. Snow was much better than expected. The Vermillion River was great and the few trails we touched were in pretty good shape. For the new folks be careful of the rapids on the river, you must take the portage trails to get around them.

Pictures from last Sunday on the CJ Ramstad North Shore State Trail on the Minnesota north shore. Rode from Two Harbors to Finland and back. Got into some great snow on some of the minimum maintenance roads around Finland and there was plenty of snow on the trails. They just needed a groom, which I’m assuming they did this week. Off to Lake Vermillion/ Crane Lake today for some riding.
