READ THIS you might be sad if you don’t :(

We’ve had an overwhelming request for more fall training so we have added an extra night and created a lite version (details below). It begins this Monday 9/14 at 5:30 and will run for 4 weeks with a training on Saturdays. If you qualify for the Gauley trip we will be heading out 10/10-11. If you need to rent a half slice or play boat for this course please let us know!

We have also added a Fall Training Lite. Which will be focused on getting you comfortable in fast moving chaotic water, your edges, and advanced maneuvers focused on efficiency. If you need to rent a half slice boat or play boat please let us know! If you qualify we will be headed to the New river guided by Stephen Wright, and the Lower Gauley.

Space for both is extremely limited!

Join Calleva and our professional instructors for our Gauley River training and playboating clinics on the Potomac River.

I know I preach the seneca breaks and GW workouts a lot and some of you think it’s just because I am always around that area, but it’s actually not, it because it’s a better workout physically and technically than the gorge. Plus plenty of parking and usually there is no one else around. Take it from the mouth of someone else whom has been doing cheat training for a long time:

I finally made it over the top Saturday. I’ve been able to make it to the last attainment on the VA side right below the GW entrance and the ladder but never over before Saturday. Being down to 3.8 probably helped.

Thanks for pointing me at the right spot.

BTW, I went back to Anglers and braved the crowds last Wednesday. I was afraid just paddling the Breaks had softened me. Turns out training on the breaks is a better workout! I had lots of energy by the time I reached Rocky (and failed repeatedly as always).

Stay well,
Mark

Festival Friday, and the river gods have delivered! Hope everyone enjoys some Highwater Potomac, whether that’s surfing the corner hole, doing a juicy gorge run, or getting some friends and heading to Lock ten. Get outside and have some fun(and practice good social distancing…)!

Cheat Fest is always my favorite weekend of the year. The Thursday before the race I would normally be packing a cooler, excitedly & obsessively checking the river level, texting friends to see who is camping where.

The Cheat Race and Festival are joyful celebrations of what I love most- community, whitewater, friends & music. It's a time to have the Cr@) scared out of you- when you enter Decision backwards with boats on every side. And to enjoy your achievements when you finish the race to the cheers of 50+ Cheat Trainers, paddling buddies you haven't seen for a year, and WV folk on the bridge. Cheat Fest, for me, also marks the transition from springtime and all the great water it brings, to my favorite season- SUMMER!

Of course, everything is different this year. My mourning the cancelation of a festival seems petty and privileged when society is facing much greater loss and change. I do want to take this weekend to mark what is important to me. Cheat Fest has always been about much more than boatin' and drinking beer.

I'm also thinking about impact canceled events and fundraisers have on the organizations that protect our rivers and access to them. This is a great time to join FOC, buy a Tshirt, support the causes that are important to you.
