Cheat Fest is always my favorite weekend of the year. The Thursday before the race I would normally be packing a cooler, excitedly & obsessively checking the river level, texting friends to see who is camping where.
The Cheat Race and Festival are joyful celebrations of what I love most- community, whitewater, friends & music. It's a time to have the Cr@) scared out of you- when you enter Decision backwards with boats on every side. And to enjoy your achievements when you finish the race to the cheers of 50+ Cheat Trainers, paddling buddies you haven't seen for a year, and WV folk on the bridge. Cheat Fest, for me, also marks the transition from springtime and all the great water it brings, to my favorite season- SUMMER!
Of course, everything is different this year. My mourning the cancelation of a festival seems petty and privileged when society is facing much greater loss and change. I do want to take this weekend to mark what is important to me. Cheat Fest has always been about much more than boatin' and drinking beer.
I'm also thinking about impact canceled events and fundraisers have on the organizations that protect our rivers and access to them. This is a great time to join FOC, buy a Tshirt, support the causes that are important to you.
