Avelo Fact Friday 🤿

Avelo Mode is more than a setting on a compatible Shearwater or Scubapro dive computer. It provides Avelo specific information during the dive and records data that can help us better understand the dive afterward.

Why does that matter?

Because memory and feeling do not always tell the whole story. A dive may have felt smooth, but the recorded data may reveal moments when the diver worked harder, became less stable, or improved compared with an earlier dive.

Avelo is now introducing Avelo Edge, a new analysis tool designed to help turn that information into a clearer picture of stability, workload, efficiency, and progress over time.

The data does not replace instructor observation or diver judgment.
It gives us another tool for asking better questions, having more useful conversations, and becoming more thoughtful divers.

Avelo Mode records the dive.

Throwback Thursday 🤿

This was my son’s very first dive.

We were in Marathon, Florida, near Alligator Reef. Many of you have probably explored that same reef.

They called it a Peter Dive. The cylinder stayed on the surface in a small raft while a long breathing hose ran down to the diver. The hose connected at the weight belt, with a shorter low pressure hose running to the second stage regulator. The Divemaster towed the raft and gave my son the tour of his life.

It was a simple way for him to experience breathing underwater without wearing a full scuba kit.

And what an experience it was.

We saw almost everything a young boy could dream of seeing on his first dive. Turtles, sharks, rays, lobsters, eels, barracuda, and my personal favorite, juvenile damselfish.

That first dive started something.

It lit a fire in my son that is still burning brightly. Today, he is a certified PADI Junior Open Water Diver. Soon, he will become a certified Avelo Diver.

The equipment has changed since that first dive, but the reason we dive has not.

The Peter Diving equipment gave him his first look at the underwater world. Today, the Avelo Kit is the system I choose for myself and the system I feel most comfortable choosing for my wife and children.

That is my personal opinion, but it comes from understanding the system, teaching it, diving it, and trusting the training that goes with it.

No matter what equipment we wear, sharing scuba diving with the people we love makes the experience sweeter.

Those are the dives we never forget.

Why Avelo Wednesday 🤿

Avelo Essentials is not just about learning how the system works when everything is going right. It is also about learning what to do when something does not feel right.

During Avelo Essentials training, we teach divers to recognize and respond to situations such as a continuously running pump, a simulated water leak, and an out of breathing gas situation.

Why does that matter?

Because confidence comes from understanding the system you are diving.

We teach you what the pump does, what the purge valve does, how the Hydrotank changes buoyancy, and how to respond calmly if the system behaves differently than expected.

For example, if the pump continues adding water, the diver becomes more negatively buoyant. That does not mean the diver suddenly loses control. The diver can adjust body position a bit head up and kick to maintain depth. Once the pump stops, monitor pressure and purge water to restore neutral buoyancy. In my experience, a charged battery provides roughly six pump cycles, so the pump cannot continue adding water indefinitely.

That is the value of training.

It does not teach us to ignore a problem or blindly trust the equipment. It teaches us to recognize the problem, remain in control, and make a calm decision about continuing the dive or ending the dive.

At first, the Avelo System was a bit to wrap my head around. Then, when I got in the water with it for the first time, the lightbulb moment happened and it all clicked.

Once I started looking at the Hydrotank as the BCD, the whole Avelo System made a lot more sense. With regular scuba gear, we add air to the BCD when we want more buoyancy. We let air out when we want less buoyancy.

The Avelo System does the same basic job, but it uses water inside the Hydrotank. Turn on the pump and water is added to the Hydrotank. The system gets heavier. Open the purge valve and water leaves the Hydrotank. The system gets lighter.

That is your buoyancy control.

Here is why that matters.

Air can be compressed by pressure. As we go deeper, the air in a traditional BCD gets smaller. As we come back up, it gets bigger. That means our buoyancy can change just because our depth changed.

However, water does not compress very well. Once we add the amount of water we need to our hydrotank to achieve neutral buoyancy and close the purge valve, that water stays inside the Hydrotank. It does not grow and shrink as we change depth.

Then, when the dive is over and you are back at the surface, you open the purge valve. The water leaves the Hydrotank and the system becomes much more buoyant, just like adding air to a traditional BCD at the surface.

Different equipment.

Same basic goal.

Once you understand how the equipment works, achieving buoyancy is a snap and it lasts for most of the dive. There might be a need to add more water/ballast later during the dive, but that's for another post!

**Myth Monday**

Myth: “The Avelo System replaces good buoyancy skills.”

Truth: It does not replace them. It helps you use them.

We start by weighting the diver about two pounds positive at the surface with no ballast in the Hydrotank. One pump cycle adds water and brings the diver close to neutral. For our controlled descent, we swim in instead of falling in.

Now breathing matters.

A deeper breath can start a gentle rise. A full exhalation can start a gentle descent. Because you are not carrying unnecessary weight, you can actually feel those changes as they happen.

Avelo does not do the skill for you. It gives you a better platform to learn and feel proper buoyancy control.

There is nothing better than watching a diver experience Avelo for the first time.

The thing about diving Avelo is that it’s not about doing more, it’s about minimizing task loading and simplifying the dive.

For example, with the Avelo System, there isn’t a low-pressure inflator that you have to constantly manipulate every time you change depth. You establish neutral buoyancy at the surface by adding ballast to the hydrotank if it's needed, and then you rarely have to adjust it again. That’s true whether you’re at 5 feet or 120 feet.

Set it and forget it.

📸🌊 Throwback Thursday 🤿

They say a picture is worth a thousand words...

This photo was taken when I was 15 years old, standing beside my brother and sister after one of our dives at Lake Sam Rayburn, Texas. Looking back at those old masks, fins, and scuba gear brings back a flood of great memories—and reminds me just how far diving has come over the years.

Back then, we only had one BC to share between the three of us, so I often dove with nothing more than a backpack and an aluminum 80. Looking back, it's funny how familiar that felt. During the last several minutes of the dive, after most of the gas had been consumed, the aluminum tank became much more buoyant. With my weight dialed in, it created an incredibly balanced, effortless feeling in the water. In many ways, it reminds me of what I enjoy so much about diving the Avelo System today. Those final few minutes of the dive always felt like I was flying underwater—and they were, without a doubt, my favorite part of every dive.

A lot has changed since then, but what hasn't changed is the feeling.

The excitement before rolling into the water.

The adventure of exploring a world most people never get to see.

The friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

I had no idea back then that scuba diving would become such a big part of my life. Decades later, I'm still just as passionate about introducing people to the underwater world as I was when this picture was taken.

The equipment has evolved. The technology has advanced. But the magic of taking that first breath underwater is exactly the same. 💙
