Plan of catching and keeping a trophy striper? Not in NJ at least for now. The New Jersey Marine Fisheries Council approved tighter regulations for striped bass fishing in NJ. The new rules create a slot limit allowing anglers to keep one fish between 28 inches and less than 38 inches per fishing trip and allows the state’s popular striped bass bonus permit program to continue. Possession of a bonus permit allows an angler to keep one additional striped bass between 24 inches and 28 inches, starting on May 15th. were determined to be overfished by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. An Atlantic StatesMarine Fisheries Council decision last October set a coast-wide standard for striped bass- one fish between 28 inches and less than 35 inches, but states were given some flexibility if they showed the alternative could still achieve the target 18% reduction in fish kept. New Jersey’s new rules must receive final approval from the ASMFC.
