Melges 15 Winter Series #2
By Hollin Calloway
We had an incredible weekend of sailing—honestly the happiest I’ve felt in months. From our fleet, Tim and Kate Faranetta joined us and, as always, sailed very well both days.
Saturday brought a SSW breeze with 133 boats on the line—by far the largest regatta I’ve personally sailed. Temperatures were in the upper 60s to low 70s, with wind starting at 10–14 knots and gusting 15–18, staying fairly consistent all day with the expected gradual right shift. The water was cold, so spray tops stayed on all day.
Traffic management was the biggest challenge. The starting line was roughly half a mile long, starts were intense, and finding a clean hole was difficult. We were hit by a port-tack boat at one start (no damage), but overall it was controlled chaos. The course was set with a long 1-mile beat, which felt long but gave plenty of time to work shifts and strategy. There were shifty gusts and holes, with lots of tacking on headers. Clear air was critical—we often sailed away from the “correct” side just to escape bad air in such a huge fleet.
Approaching the windward mark was particularly challenging. The starboard-tack layline was very congested, with significant bad air to leeward that punished anyone under-stood or just barely making it. Visibility was also an issue: the white windward mark with a red M15 logo blended into the sails, as did the offset. I relied on other boats’ laylines and watching spinnakers pop to locate the marks.
