In my defense, they said I was the dramatic one because I “always worry I’m not going to get everything done in time” they say dramatic, I say perfectionist.

After my brother passed away in 2008, returning to teach was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I still remember that first class back — I stood in front of the room and couldn’t pretend to smile when I was hurting so deeply inside. When the first song started, I had to stop. I simply needed more time to process.
From that point on, I began building playlists around what I was experiencing in life. Each song carried a different mood — sometimes anger, sometimes sadness, sometimes strength, and sometimes healing. Music and movement became my therapy. They reminded me that you can’t fake happiness, and you can’t rush healing.
We are all carrying battles others may never see, but somehow we come together for many of the same reasons on the dance floor.
