Rover returning from an amazing Day 1 diving Scapa Flow. Your report for the day:

Wrecks hit today were the cruisers Karlsruhe and Dresden. Max depths were 86ft and 118ft respectively. Bottom temp was 55 degrees, visibility was 20-30 ft.

Underwater footage, at least from the Rover on site, will not be forthcoming due to their gopro up and floating away🤦🏼🤦🏼🤦🏼

Hopefully this sacrifice to Poseidon will result in excellent diving conditions the rest of the week 🤞🏻

On the menu tomorrow (hopefully): the dreadnought battleships Kronprinz and König 🔥🔥🔥

The Lancing was a ship with a long and varied history. First launched in 1897 as the bulk freighter Knight Errant, it served the merchant fleets of Great Britain, Russia, and finally Norway. The Norwegians were the ones who redesigned the ship as a whaling factory ship, renamed it Lancing, and made it the first ship equipped with stern ramp that was used to pull whales into its hold where they would be processed.

By World War II, the Lancing went through another redesign after the fall of Norway, this time to serve as an oil tanker for the Allies. She was sunk by the U-552, commanded by the legendary Erich Topp, on April 7th, 1942. When sunk, the Lancing was carrying nearly 9,000 tons of fuel oil, and much of this is still present in the wreck.

Time for a Rover Report💪🏻

This weekend the Richmond Rovers and friends from NC aka the Raleigh Rovers went out on the legendary Lion's Paw with . Poor weather prevented us from going out on Saturday, but on Sunday we were all treated to some amazing diving.

Dive #1 was done on the Lancing, a 470ft oiler sunk by a u-boat in WWII. Depth was 170ft and the visibility was absolutely amazing: 100ft plus, with 71 degrees bottom temp and only light mid-water currents. You know you're in for a good dive when the Captain can't contain his excitement 😆

Dive #2 was on the wreck of the SS Northeastern, a 254 ft oil tanker sunk on Diamond Shoals in 1904. With max depth of 45 ft it was the perfect second dive after our deeper deco dive on the Lancing. Currents were stiffer on the Shoals but the wreck provided plenty of cover and exploring it was alot of fun. The Northeastern is not visited much but definitely worth it.

Several Rovers were shooting video so more footage and photos coming soon. These dives represent the absolute best that NC can offer!
