Course conditions update! That world class single track from Big Fir Aid Station to Scout is staying nice and tacky thanks to some snowfall. Coming off Crestline Trail there are several large snow covered areas that will linger till race day most likely. Who doesn’t love a free snow cone during a race? 🍧 If you’re out on course tag us so we can share more of the course with everyone!

Course Conditions update! Snowpacks keeping the single track nice and smooth for race day. The cornice at the top of Mormon Canyon is a nice 20 feet. The course is warming up nicely, the waters flowing and the flowers starting to bloom!

As the days start to get a bit longer and trails start emerging from winter’s grasp, we wanted to touch base. Just as you are working hard at preparing your body for the run, we are working very hard to put together the event. At this point we the race is 70% full and we expect a sold out event. Remind your training partners and friends to register before it’s too late!

There will be a few more updates between now and the race, but this time we are looking for some help. We are looking for a new aid station captain and crew for the Elk Meadows aid station. After 10 years of service the Lorri and Tori Shaver have decided to open the opportunity to someone else. Do you know someone that could be interested? Please let us know if you do!

Thank you for being awesome and part of the Scout Mountain Ultras community. More to come soon!

Sincerely,

Luke Nelson

Believe it or not registration for the 2022 edition of Scout Mountain Ultras opens on December 1st! Since it takes a bit more preparation to get ready for the 100 mile race, we give those runners a head start. Registration for the 50 and 21 mile event will open on New Year’s at midnight. Link to register ( https://runsignup.com/Race/ID/Pocatello/ScoutMountainUltras ) and in the profile.
We’ve changed things up a bit so do us a favor and share with your friends and anyone else you’d like to see join us for the race!

Trail work opportunity! Saturday October 16, 9:00. A new trail connection from West Bighorn Drive to the Campbell Creek Trail (connects to Slate Mountain from a subdivision near off Mink Creek). This could count as trail work service hours for the 100 miler, and is great for our community. Message for more details or if you have questions.

Final Race updates for the 2021 Event

Important Updates.

Weather:
It is going to be very hot. Our current forecast for the finish area is predicting highs in the low 90s on Friday and high 80s on Saturday. The low temperatures at the finish will be just below 60 degrees. This is very HOT! The risk for heat injury is very real. Our medical team has been working hard on plans to support all of you during the event. Please pay close attention to your fluid consumption and your heat management. Many of the water sources on the race course are already dry, you cannot plan on those in your hydration plan. More information on fluid consumption and heat injury will be posted on the race website.

Mandatory Equipment:
21 and 50 mile runners will be required to have the capacity to carry minimum of 1 liter of water. 100 mile runners will be required to have 2 liter capacity. This is not optional. You will not be allowed to start the race without it, and if it is discover that you do not have that capacity during the race you will be disqualified. This is a serious mountain race, and despite the high temperatures we could experience significant shifts in the weather. While we are not making it mandatory, we do strongly suggest that all runners go on course prepared with a light jacket, small first aid kit, headlamp, whistle and an emergency blanket.

Check-in:
All Check in will be done at Mink Creek Group site. Check in for the 100 mile race will be 8:30-11:00 on Friday morning. Pre-race meeting at 11 and start at noon. Check in for the 50 and 21 mile events will start at 1:00 pm and go until 6:00 pm. Pre-race meeting will be at 6:00 pm. There may be a short period of time after the meeting to check in runners arriving late. 21 and 50 mile runners will also need to check in race morning to get their timing chips and assure that they did not sleep in and miss the start. 50 mile starts at 6:00 am, 21 mile starts in 3 waves starting at 9:00 am. (More on that below). You must check yourself in, as there needs to be a USATF waiver signed by each runner.

21 Mile Start:
Due to the size of the field we will be doing a 3 wave start. Your bib number will be associated with the wave in which you are starting. These will be 9:00, 9:15, and 9:30. We are doing this to spread out the runners and to not overwhelm our volunteers at the South Scout Aid Station.

Parking and Shuttle:
The shuttle schedule has been posted on the website under the Event Info tab. Reminder that there is no runner, crew or spectator parking at the group site. 100 mile runners will park at Lead Draw Trailhead, the remainder will park at Century High School, on the west side of the school in the large parking lot. The shuttles will return you to your vehicles at those two locations. Any vehicles parking on Mink Creek road, or West Fork Trailheads that are associated with runners will be towed and the runner disqualified. The one exception to this will be runners actively engaged in crewing their 50 or 100 mile runners, with an official crew tag at the West Fork of Mink Creek Trailhead. Volunteers will be allowed to park at the finish area.

Scout Mountain Merchandise :
We have a limited amount of shirts and buffs from prior years, as well a limited edition Scout Mountain NoSo patch (can be attached to any appearance or running pack) that we will be selling at check in. These will be sold in increments of $5 and given limited service will be sold for cash. Please come prepared if you want some rad goodies.

Enviro Raffle:
Our race has always been a tool to raise environmental literacy in the running community. During the check in on Friday you will have the opportunity to interact with some local groups and while doing so earn tickets to a really awesome raffle. This is the one and only way to earn tickets for it, and if you win you will be awarded your prize as you cross the finish line! Please ask at check in about our initiatives to lower our race impact and the work we do in our community.

Trash/Waste:
You will notice 4 receptacles in several locations at check in and around the finish area. We try very hard to reduce waste that goes to the landfill. Please help us by sorting your waste in to trash (including biodegradable bowls and utensils), recycling, terracycle (energy gel/bars wrappers) and compost (food). Similar sorting will be at all aid stations as well. Last year we had 5 garbage bags of trash go to the landfill. Because of some new restrictions this year associated with COVID, we may have a few more because of the single use, biodegradable bowls, but ask you to help us try to set a new record of minimal trash!

Dogs:
We love dogs, but they are not allowed any where at the race. Please keep them at home. This includes crew, family, spectators, or anyone else that is associated with the race (with one exception that the 100 mile runners will experience). The presence of a dog will result in the disqualification of the runner associated with it.

Thank You:
This race would not be possible without the support of over 100 volunteers. Please be kind to them while on course and while checking in. I ask that all praise be poured on them from you, if you have a complaint or concern, or need to vent for any reason please find me, Luke Nelson Race Director, for that conversation. The volunteers do not deserve anything but our gratitude for making this memory making experience possible. Also, huge thank you to our race partners, Patagonia, Zeal Optics, Petzl, GU Energy Labs, LaSportiva, and Jaybird. Remember to support the brands that support you! Finally, thank you to you! We could not have this great event without all of you, the runners. See you in a couple days!
