Happy New Year!!!

11/06/2023

We plan to have our annual dojo Christmas party on Thursday December 7th. That is the same night as the Pocahontas parade. The plan is for us to go down to Broadway, watch the parade. Then we will go back to the dojo to have our party. I will be driving my car in the parade, carrying Ms Randolph County. As soon as I get back to the dojo we will do our annual award(s) and eat. As all years in the past, I encourage all to bring some sort of food to share. I’ll be letting one of the students take lead on making sure all the logistics are taken care of. 2023 has been another great year. I appreciate all past and present students that have got us to this point. Our future is definitely looking bright!!!

Rei

One thing you should know before you start is a Japanese word called “Rei".

Most people think the word just means to bow. Firstly, I know bowing may be difficult to do, it was for me. I felt conscious and felt like smiling when bowing for the first time. However, the word “Rei” means to show respect through bowing. The bow must be meaningful, sincere and cautious. Some ancient legends say that by bowing to someone you are showing complete trust by lowering your neck that could easily be cut off by a sword. I am told that this is much in the same way that a knight would shake hands with the same hand he would draw his sword. I don't know if that was completely true in the case of the Knight but here, in the case of bowing, it is to show respect.

As a class you bow to the Sensei to show that you respect the fact that they have spent a number of years studying and practicing so that they can be worthy of passing on this experience to you and they bow to you to show you respect for appreciating this experience and allowing them to empty their mind so that it can be filled with more knowledge. You then bow to each other to thank one another for being honest and respectful in your partner training or sparring.

Finally, we bow to the Dojo when entering and again on leaving. The Dojo must be respected not unlike a place of worship so do not bow half heartedly but equally, do not bow too low as this can be interpreted as being too humble. In Japan the ladies bow lower than the men but that is in Japan, not here.
