🦆 CALL OF THE WEEK: Arkansas Pine Knot

This week's call is a little piece of Arkansas with a story behind it.

The barrel of this call was turned from Arkansas pine knot that we collected ourselves. We paired it with a contrasting end piece to really showcase the rich color and character of the pine knot.

🌲 Did You Know?
Pine knot is extremely rich in natural pine resin. That resin makes the wood hard, dense, and resistant to decay—often allowing the knotty heartwood to remain long after the softer wood around it has deteriorated.

You may have also heard it called fatwood, lighter wood, fat lighter, or heart pine. For generations, resin-rich pine knot has been prized throughout the South as a natural fire starter.

We love being able to take something we collected right here in Arkansas and turn it into a Dixie Mallard call. 🦆

🦆 CALL OF THE WEEK: African Blackwood

This week’s featured call is made from one of the most unique—and incredibly dense—woods we work with: African Blackwood.

Native to parts of tropical and southern Africa, African Blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) is known for its deep black to dark purplish-brown heartwood, fine grain, and exceptional hardness. (Plants of the World Online)

🎶 Did You Know?
African Blackwood is one of the world’s premier woods for woodwind instruments and is especially prized for making clarinets and oboes. Its density, stability, and ability to hold incredibly fine details also make it one of the finest woods for turning. (Wood Database)

And here’s another fun fact—it may look like ebony, but African Blackwood isn’t a true ebony at all. It’s actually part of the rosewood genus! (Wood Database)

Those same qualities make it a pretty special wood to turn into a Dixie Mallard duck call. 🦆

🦆 CALL OF THE WEEK: Green Bois d’Arc

This week's featured call has quite a story behind it!

The barrel is Green Bois d’Arc recovered from Lake Eufaula in Oklahoma, where it had been underwater for an estimated 40–60 years. We paired it with a Yellow Bois d’Arc end piece so you can see the story of the wood in one call—where it started and how it ended.

🌳 Did You Know?
Bois d’Arc is also known as Osage Orange, Bodark, Hedge Apple, Bowwood, and Horse Apple. It's an incredibly hard, durable wood with a natural resistance to decay. The name Bois d’Arc means “wood of the bow,” a reference to its historic use by the Osage people for making bows.

It was also widely used for fence posts because of how well the wood holds up to the elements!

What an incredible weekend at the Ducks Unlimited Expo!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by Booth #777 to visit with us and support our family's tradition. We truly enjoyed meeting so many new faces and catching up with longtime friends.

🦆 Sneak Peek #3… Where Craftsmanship Meets Art. 🎨

We’re excited to share something truly special!

This year, we’re bringing three one-of-a-kind, hand-painted duck calls created by Robin Parrish of Morrilton, Arkansas. Robin’s artwork combined with our handcrafted calls makes each one a unique piece of Arkansas craftsmanship.

These calls will make their debut at the Ducks Unlimited Expo and will be available at Booth #777.
