Q: "If I'm diving and can see or smell the smoke from faraway wildfires, should I be concerned that the air in my cylinder is contaminated?"


A: That's a valid concern, and one we sent a team to investigate in 2018. After testing air quality in and around 17 dive shops from San Diego, California, to Eugene, Oregon during the wildfire season, DAN's risk mitigation team found no increased risk to divers due to smoke from the fires. Our professionals analysed concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and particulate matter in the air near the dive shops and the fires. What the team found was reassuring: NONE of the tests showed elevated levels CO or CO2, even when smoke was present. Although there were high levels of particulate in some areas, these were found to be easily removed by compressors' filtration systems.
