Reposting from trail steward Todd Posson:
PSA of the day. I'm going to post this in a couple different groups.
This week is going to suck for hiking, trail running and mountain biking. The weather is awesome (mid-50's), but the trail conditions are going to be abhorrent.
Due to the awesome, desperately needed (for my mental health at least) warm temps, the tread surface of all natural-surface (i.e. dirt, singletrack) trails is going to be thawing and melting the remnants of the recent 2-4" of snow and previous 6"+ of snow.
The main issue is that below the upper 05.-1" at the surface which is completely thawed is a relatively deep frozen section because we had sustained temperatures well below freezing. We also had a fair amount of moisture in the soils from the early January snow, so the sub-zero temps froze all that moisture to probably 18-24" down. The moisture from the recent 2-4" snow has melted, but it has nowhere to go b/c the ground below it is frozen, so it cannot infiltrate and "go away". The good news is that highs near 60 and lows that may not go below freezing means that we might actually get a full thaw by the end of the week.
This means that while temps are near perfect, all dirt-surface trails are going to be a nasty, sloppy mess all week (most likely). While we all want to get out and get some fresh air and exercise, the most responsible thing to do would be to do that on paved trails this week. This isn't even about "UTC trails". Even those trail in parks not maintained by UTC should be avoided this week to avoid damaging them.
We can't wait to hit the trails again either but it's going to be a while yet - please be patient!
