While cleaning up the pistol steel range, I found this. It looks to have been shot with something with too much zip on it. The front face of these plate racks are mild steel that rely on the angle to deflect damage. It's fine when only s**t with standard velocity ammo but rifle ammo tends to put a hurting on it. I pulled it, put it on my trailer and hailed it to my shop in Cullman. Took me about 4 hours to fix the damage. It had several craters from other high velocity hits. Brought it back the next day, almost good as new. Enjoy!

Notice!!!
Monday Feb 23 we are doing major road maintenance and applying a couple inches of reclaimed asphalt. It may not be passable with a passenger car at times. Pardon the progress. It will be worth the effort. This may spill over onto Tuesday the 24th.

Got one this morning at 10 am. If you have joined but not yet completed your RSO, a crappy day outside like today would be a good time to get it done. The classroom is heated and comfy. Come on and get it done.

The next one is Feb 7, Feb 21, Mar 7, and Mar 21. Basically, every other Saturday at 10. Plan on getting here at 930. Bring your ID and current pistol permit to the office when you get here. Donald will make a photo copy for you which you take to the classroom and give to Lee, our GM who handles the RSO. It normally lasts about an hour and once complete, you have access to the facility.

The new and improved Paper Pistol ranges are open! I pressure washed the old concrete which brightened everything up and painted the border safety yellow. Looks great!

This is something I have been wanting to do for my members for a very long time. If you have been following my posts, a while back I shared the story about spending a couple of weeks sifting the gravel out of the brass on these two ranges. There was more brass on the ground than gravel. In all, I pulled 23 5 gallon buckets of brass off the ground that had been left there by members. No one picked up their brass. Having a solid, clean, smooth surface to shoot from also means you will have the same to more easily recover your spent brass from. This upgrade was just under $14,000. It elevates the facility. All shooting positions on the whole facility are on a concrete base.

You will also notice some work has been done to the Steel Plate range. The overhead structure I built in 2018 had started to lean a few degrees backward. I cross braced the structure in 5 spots with cable and tensioners which pulled it back straight and strengthened it. They are unobtrusive and necessary.

Next on my list is a networked camera system to monitor all the activities on the facility at a central location in the office. The system will make accountability for trashing the ranges or damage caused easy to enforce. If you leave brass on the ground, trash on the tables or used targets on stands, you will be held accountable. The range cleaning fee of $50 is due and payable at your next visit before range use will be permitted. This elevates the facility.

I am 60. Maintaining this place was not really a big deal when I was a younger man. I am finding it harder to come up with the energy necessary to get on my hands and knees for hours cleaning up after range users. Every upgrade I have done over the last several years have one common goal... to reduce the work it takes to keep this place up. We have members who leave a mess, get called out on it with a phone call from Lee, then on their next range visit leave a double handful of brass on the ground and garbage on the range. The cameras and $50 cleaning fee / fine are here because of the few that are mucking it up for the rest. I have to do something to correct this behavior. Don't want to pay the fine? No problem. Good luck finding another facility. You will be trespassed and not allowed to ever return.

Got her done... well almost. Tomorrow I have to tear the forms down and paint the border. Looks good. Big thanks to Cobra Concrete for jobs well done. Should be ready to use by this weekend, if the rain holds off for me.

While the concrete truck was here still spinning, Lee asked me how long before a member shoots it. I guessed a few days. I was right. Yesterday, members whose shooting skills sucked so hugely that they put 5 divots in our freshly poured surface about 2 feet below the target. I bought 4000 psi concrete which should hold up to an occasional skip but this is fresh concrete. It has not cured yet. It takes 28 days for concrete to cure and teach the hardness it is capable of reaching.

Same group shot an AK47 on this range, leaving a mag full of 762x39 steel cases on the ground. One of the AK rounds hit the metal frame on one of the target stands, chewing a chunk out of it. Handgun rounds won't hut the frames. Rifle rounds destroy frames.

So. You will see changes here in the near future. Cameras are coming so staff can monitor activities from the office and hold those accountable for anything they damage. A range cleaning fee of $50 will be assessed to anyone leaving their mess. It's the only way I know to fix this. We have a really nice range. I want to keep it this way.

It took me about 2 days to put this table together for the newly upgraded paper pistol B range. I got the concrete job finished and looked around. The two tables there were pretty sad. This one should last at least as long as the old ones, 20 years or so.

Not find something for the Dad, Husband, Brother, Sister, Uncle, Cousin, Son, Daughter, Grandpa, etc. who is impossible to buy gifts for? How about setting them up for a year of range use to enjoy the guns they already own? Go to the range's web site, www.foprange.com/membership, pick out an annual plan for them and use coupon code GIFT40 at checkout. This sets up an annual membership without the auto recurring dues payment that normally occurs with membership. Next year they can renew on their own and most (over 98%) do.
