On September 17, 1999 Hurricane Floyd changed the High Peaks forever. The ongoing fire on Noonmark was put out with the 6 inches of rain that fell, but other natural events occurred too. New slides occurred, blocking Avalanche Pass and tons of trees fell (sound familiar). The devastation blocked trails from the Dix Range across an arc to Upper Works. Trails were closed to Allen, Cliff, and Redfield.

More Calamity Brook Trail Work by our All Volunteer Trail Crew this past weekend. A few photos from volunteer Paul G.

It is no wonder this trail needs some love – do you know how long it has been there?

Do you ever walk a trail and think how many came before you or who may have been the ones to first walk on the trail? In the case of the Calamity Brook trail one has to reach a long way back. In HUH on page 171 we read “The approach to Mt Marcy along the Calamity Brook and Opalescent River was fully established by the time of the Civil War, and the route would remain a standard one until Verplank Colvin pioneered the short approach by way of the Feldspar Brook to Lake Tear in the 1870's.” From Page 171 HUH

Cooler mornings are lovely for starting a hike where you can warm up while moving, but for our Trailhead Stewards cooler mornings while being fairly still can be a bit of a challenge. Wouldn't it be lovely if they were offered a hot cup of joe/tea/cocoa by a passer by? And a sweet treat too? Might that be you supporting their work when you drive by? Trail magic.
