Dallas Kajukembo

Dallas Kajukembo My name is Jeff Grant and I am the owner and instructor of Dallas Kajukembo. I have been involved in the martial arts for a little over 25 years now.

It took a good number of those years to find what I think is the best art for me and my students. For the last 17 years I have dedicated myself to the art of Kajukembo. An art I feel encompasses everything I was looking for. I have been lucky enough to be the student of some of the greatest instructors anywhere, and to this day continue to receive their advise and knowledge. Kajukembo is a formali

zed mixed martial are system created in the state of Hawaii during the late 1940's. It is made up of 5 martial arts that together also gave birth to the name Kajukembo. The arts are Karate ("Ka"), Judo/Jujitsu ("Ju"), Kempo ("Kem"), and Boxing ("Bo"). Kajukembo was designed to fill in the gaps that each of the traditional arts had and create a well rounded art that could deal with all aspects of defense. It is primarily a striking art that makes use of throws, take downs, joint locks, and ground work when needed. But it is all blended into the system to flow seamlessly.

This was an amazing weekend for me. I had the pleasure to meet up my instructor, Burt Vickers, and the rest of my kaju brothers in KSDS. As well as make new lifelong friendships. If that was not enough. I was promoted this weekend to 6th degree. It is still sinking in. If you had told me when I started that I would one day reach this milestone, I would not have believed it. Thank you to my mentor, Burt Vickers for all his support, and my students for honoring me and giving me the opportunity to even be a teacher.
I am forever grateful.

Attended an event in Curch Point, Louisiana this weekend put together by Cody Begnaud. What an awesome event it was and I was grateful I was able to participate. Each presenter shared a glimpse into their system or art. I have left this event with some new knowledge that I will genuinely bring back with me and apply. This is what this type of event is meant to do.
Along the way I made new friends with my brothers in the larger family of Kajukembo, and others outside of my family tree.

Kajukembo was created to blend various arts and their respective weapons depending on range and situation. Thus we incorporate strikes, kicks, joint locks, throws, takedown, sweeps, and grappling to cover all situations and reduce or eliminate gaps.
While we teach techniques. They are not techniques in and of themselves. They are meant to show how to make use of these tools in different scenarios. These tools are meant to modular. Allowing you to flow from striking to throwing to ground work in a fluid manner. This video shows my student blending standing techniques with disruption into a throw. In this particular class we were working on flowing from striking to a throw. In this instance the finish was using o soto guruma.

Last night we spent sometime on our jujitsu extensions. Our curriculum consists of extensions, whether they are striking extensions, throwing, or joint lock extensions. They are meant to supplement our techniques, and to be used when opportunity presents itself.

We met as a group this morning at our favorite breakfast spot in Plano; Red Truck Diner. It served twofold, one to catchup as a group and the other to celebrate our first Junior Black Belt.
We were blessed this morning by 3 former students who all recommitted to restarting their training in September. We are excited to have them back and look forward to their continued journey.

Yesterday my students and I had the privilege of being hosted by our friends at Tapper's Kenpo Karate. The event was to allow us to share our respective arts and learn from each other. We were also visited by Danny Nguyen and our friends at Golden Tiger TKD. Steve Tapper is an amazing and knowledgeable martial artist. My students appreciate the friendship and hospitality extended by him and his students. It was a great session in which we focused on blending jujitsu with striking and on offensive techniques. I came away from the session humbled and more informed. I look forward to our next event.
