How many times have you heard someone say something to the effect of, "yeah, I was down and out with this flu bug for almost a week. I was so sick! But, I lost 5 pounds, so at least I've got that going for me."

Not only have I heard it, I had SAID it more than once when I was in the throes of disordered eating and excessive exercise. It was almost WORTH being sick just to be smaller. Just to be LESS.

Appetite is the inborn incentive to feed ourselves. You know why? Because eating is a biological imperative. WE NEED FOOD TO SURVIVE. If you are not receiving this signal, or it's shut off by sickness or stress, that is an indicator that something is wrong.

The flu can be a potentially fatal affliction, even in this day and age. It is not a detox cleanse. Going through a divorce can be emotionally and financially devastating. It is not a diet. So, please stop glorifying sickness and stress in the name of weight loss. That is not healthy. That is disordered.

We have a new addition to the studio: a EZ Curl bar! For those that experience wrist discomfort with a straight bar, you are in luck! The bar itself is 15 lbs. I put a 10 lb. plate on each side for my 4:30 client and he banged out two sets of 12 EZ Bar Curls! I will be getting 2.5 and 5 lb. plates for the bar, so if you need something between 15 and 35, I got you. πŸ˜‰

We are on day 3 of a heat wave, with today reaching potential record high temps in the Northeast. Extreme heat can exacerbate existing cardiovascular and respiratory conditions like asthma. The ac is running nonstop to keep everyone cool, but it's also important for you to take precautionary measures.

If you have a history of asthma, bring your inhaler.

If you have a history of cardiovascular disease, consider modifying your workout. The stress of keeping your body cool can tax your system, making the heart work harder to circulate blood.

And, of course, HYDRATE! If you are a "salty sweater" an electrolyte replacement drink can be helpful, and necessary.

In the meantime, I have it on "menopause mode" in here until further notice! πŸ”₯

"It's okay if you don't love it."

I said that to a client today.

I know it sounds weird for a personal trainer to say something like that. It certainly isn't the best marketing strategy!

But, it's 100% true and I meant it.

I like exercise. I have ever since I was 20 years old. It was a great way to cope with my withdrawal from ci******es. I got into step aerobics, of all things, and loved it so much that I decided to become a certified fitness instructor. That's my story. But, I believe that is not the majority of people's experience.

Some have chronic pain, or conditions like fibromyalgia, that make the prospect of physical activity daunting. Then, there are those who work full time while raising children and are stretched thin, both in time and energy. There are also those who are in large bodies who feel self-conscious and uncomfortable in their skin.

Again, I say, "It's okay if you don't love it."

Think about going on vacation. Whether it's relaxing on a sandy beach in the Caribbean or sight seeing across Europe, who doesn't look forward to a getaway? We love the destination! But, the journey? Driving to the airport, going through security, potentially losing your luggage, being kicked by the petulant tween behind you while you occupy the middle seat in coach? None of that sounds enjoyable.

But, we do it. Why? For the VACATION.

We want to play with our grandkids. We want to carry our groceries in without taking breaks. We want to go up and down stairs without fear or trepidation. We want to feel good! That is our "vacation". And, sometimes, time with me is the airplane ride. My job as your trainer is to help you feel safe and supported while you take this journey. I promise you, when you get to that sandy beach, it will all be worth it.

Remember, it's okay if you don't love it. Just show up. I will help you along the way. ❀️

Seven years ago today, we had the "Grand Opening Open House" for Cyndi Lou's Training Studio. In some ways, it doesn't seem like it has been that long; in others, it feels unimaginable that I was ever NOT doing this. Here. At home.

In 2013, I left a stable and secure job at MIT Lincoln Laboratory Fitness Center with great benefits, but a 37 mile commute and lack of growth inspired me to make a change. I always wanted to work from home, but never quite knew how to make it happen. I worked at gyms for a while until I gave it up in 2016 for a 9-5 office job (I know, the HORROR). However, The Universe wasn't going to let me off that easy and kept sending me clients anyway. I no longer worked at a gym, so I had no other option but to train these people...in my living room. 😬

After a year or so of that, my husband got tired of getting banished to the bedroom to watch TV and said, "Hey. You know that garage that has all my crap in it? Maybe you can work there!" And so, the wheels were set in motion.

My home clients moved in to the garage when the renovations were completed and my husband could play XBOX to his heart's content, once again. We call it a win win!

In all seriousness, I want to encourage anyone who has a dream or a desire to do something else to go for it. In 2013, I didn't have the answers, but they revealed themselves along the way. I didn't know if I would ever be able to build a full time clientele, but, I had to try. I had two clients before the studio opened. Now, we have 25-30 people on the books and have managed to grow beyond my wildest dreams. Being self-employed certainly has its challenges, but I'm not sorry I took the leap. Besides, you can't beat the commute! πŸ˜‰
