As we continue our journey through 100 years of Y history, we’re taking a look back at another moment that helped shape the Greater Joliet Area YMCA!

On May 24, 1964, the YMCA celebrates the dedication of the new Community Branch YMCA, located at 472 S. Joliet Street! This facility would later be renamed the Clarence C. Warren YMCA in honor of its longtime Executive Secretary.

Today's Centennial Spotlight shines on Larry Wiers! Larry is a long time supporter of the Y and currently serves as the chair of the Joliet Community YMCA Advisory Council.

Why does Larry believe the Y has been able to remain an important pillar in the community for the last century?

"Strengthening community has always been the core mission of the Y and throughout the last 100 years it has been able to adapt to the ever-evolving needs of each era while maintaining a broad, multi-generational appeal. Where else might you find toddlers learning to swim, teenagers involved in mentoring and sports, adults working out, and seniors coming together? All under the same roof!"

For 175 years, the YMCA has been a place where people come to find connection, community, and a sense of belonging. That’s why we’re proud to celebrate Welcoming Week, honoring the strength and vibrancy all neighbors bring to our community.

When visiting the Y between September 10-19, be sure to place a sticker on our Welcome Week map located in our lobby, marking your country of origin or heritage! Shown below ⬇️
