What a day. From the moment we arrived, it felt like a huge occasion at a brilliant venue, and the lads rose to it.
We started okay but spent a fair bit of the opening stages defending as Oldbury looked to put us under pressure. As the half went on though, we began to grow into the game and found the breakthrough midway through the first half. A quick counter attack saw Rob Baker break free down the left before sliding a perfect ball across the box for Chez to finish and put us 1-0 up.
That goal seemed to change the game. Confidence grew, we pushed higher up the pitch and created a couple more decent chances before heading into half-time with a deserved one-goal lead.
We started the second half strongly and soon doubled our advantage. An Oldbury defensive error was punished as Jack played Rob through on goal, and he kept his composure to finish coolly and make it 2-0 to the Social.
Oldbury werenβt done there and pulled one back through a deflected effort, swinging the momentum back in their favour. With tiring legs out there, we made a few changes, but every single player continued to put in a shift and battle for the badge.
Then came the moment that sealed it. With only a few minutes remaining, Jack was brought down in the box by the last defender. Penalty to Sandwell and a red card for Oldbury. Up stepped Rikki, calm as ever, to slot home and make it 3-1, leaving the Social on the brink of cup double glory.
The final whistle blew and we only went and did it! π
So proud of this group. Most people doubted us before this game, but the lads went out there and showed exactly what theyβre about. Massive credit to Oldbury as well, tough competitors who have had a fantastic season themselves. π€
A cup double in our very first season. What a team. Absolutely ecstatic. More content to come. π
