This is a great visual, and tracings can absolutely be a useful tool…but they’re really just one piece of the overall saddle fitting process. They provide a static representation of the horse’s top line at a single moment in time and can be helpful for monitoring development, symmetry, or changes in musculature.
However, saddle fit goes well beyond a wither tracing or topline outline. Static fit..evaluating tree width, panel contact, and clearance while the horse is standing…is only the baseline.
Once the horse is in motion, biomechanics come into play in a much more significant way. The thoracic sling engages, the scapula rotates and translates under the saddle, the ribcage lifts, and the spine goes through cycles of flexion and extension. These dynamic changes directly affect how the saddle distributes pressure, maintains panel contact, and allows for proper load bearing.
A saddle that appears appropriate in a static assessment can still create issues like bridging, focal pressure points, or restriction of scapular movement under saddle.
That’s why dynamic evaluation is imperative…observing the horse under saddle, in motion, and in work. Looking at factors like longitudinal balance, rider influence, pressure distribution, and freedom of movement provides a far more accurate assessment.
Tracings are a valuable reference point, but integrating them with dynamic assessment, biomechanical function, and ongoing changes in musculature is what leads to an optimal fit.
