To all instructors, masters and students-

As we close out 2023 with this holiday season. Please reflect upon the past year and where we can improve in our lives by adhering to the tenants of Budo.

In your shugyo keep in mind that your deadliest opponent is your own ego, jealousy, arrogance, fear, laziness, and lack of focus. It is this deadly adversary that we defeat with each technique. We polish our spirit as we polish a sword.

I wish you all health, happiness and success in 2024.

Yours truly in Budo,

Paul J Zavislak Jr. Hanshi
President of the International Ryukyukai Martial Arts Association
Shihan Dai Daito Ryu Renshinkan USA

“Morihei Ueshiba, developed Aikido from ancient Daito-ryu-aiki-jujutsu (originally called Daito-ryu) circa 1930. Part of this development involved the creation of techniques designed to counter judo techniques.

Ueshiba devised 147 counter

Listed below is 51 ‘timing points’ Ueshiba used to apply those counter techniques to Judo.

Ueshiba would start his attack:

Note: The classification in these lists is based on Isamu Takesh*ta's 1930 notebook, "Kon".

Takesh*ta was not only an admirer of Ueshiba but also an ardent practitioner of aikido, despite his age (he was almost 50).

He filled notebooks with descriptions of Ueshiba's techniques, and these descriptions provide insights into the development of aikido.”

Words of Takase Sensei-

“I was 19 when I started learning directly from Maeda Sensei. At that time, Maeda-sensei's students were divided into three factions. Maeda-sensei didn't like them always struggling. So Maeda Sensei stopped doing all the practice and closed his dojo. At that time, I went to Maeda Sensei. And I started learning directly.

Maeda-sensei is my uncle. That's why I've known him well since I was a kid. Maeda-sensei always wore a lab coat. And he was working in a pharmacy. He was very polite to explain to the customer. He was always a quiet and kind teacher. I often took my teacher in my car to the pharmacist's meeting. Maeda Sensei talked a lot about Daito in the car.I still remember everything. My precious memories.

I said when the funeral director put the bones of Maeda Sensei into the grave. "Wait. I want my teacher's bones." And I took out my teacher's bones. So I'm always with my teacher.

Maeda-sensei used to say
"If my existence disappears, it's okay if you know the path I taught." "It's okay if you remember the feeling of holding my wrist"

My uncle, Sensei Maeda Takeshi was the most important person for me in the world. Now I am guarding the 17 tombs of the Maeda clan.

Renshinkan Daitoryu is now widespread all over the world. Maeda-sensei would be very happy if he were alive.”
