Rebuilding Cougars break through for first goal, win against Salem Tech

MANNINGTON TWP — This is a different kind of year for the Schalick field hockey. The Cougars have been the dominant team in Salem County and one of contenders in South Jersey Group 1 for the past couple years, but now they’re in a classic rebuild.

The Cougars hadn’t been 0-2 to start a season in 13 years and had yet to score a goal. They finally broke through both barriers Monday when they scored their first goals of the season and secured their first win of the season, 2-1 at Salem Tech.

💚 💛 ⚽️ The Boys JV Soccer team picked up their first win of the season, defeating Overbrook 6-1!

The Cougars came out hungry for goals, and it didn’t take long to get on the board. Just 12 seconds into the game, Grant Vanlier slipped a beautiful ball through to Tim Gonzalez, who made no mistake in front of the net to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead.

The chances continued to come in abundance, and after about 10 minutes, the Cougars found themselves up 4-0, with goals from Jace Hummel and Tyler Bittle (2).

The second half showed no signs of slowing down as the boys continued to create chances and put pressure on Overbrook. Aiden Harvey was brought down in the box, earning the Cougars a penalty kick. Mateo Cummings stepped up and calmly buried a beautiful PK to make it 5-1.

Not long after, Mateo took advantage of a mistimed punt from the Overbrook goalkeeper. From roughly 35 yards out, he connected on a half-volley and found the back of the net to put the Cougars up 6-1!

Assists were recorded by Grant Vanlier, Tim Gonzalez, Mateo Cummings, Vegas Iconelli, and Aiden Harvey.

The Cougars are 1-0 in the division! Great job, boys! Keep the momentum going!
