Olympic🤼‍♂️Motivation🇺🇸
Before my time an earlier Olympic Champion spoke to the US team and told how it would feel if anyone won anything less than gold. That person would look at his medal and feel disgraced if it was anything less than gold. A member of that team looked at his silver medal and went home and put his medal in a drawer. He said, “It would be years before I realized that that man was wrong. I earned that silver medal. A referee made a mistake and I finished 2nd. I was the best in the Olympics, I just finished 2nd.”
I told him how many people make such statements seeking to motivate others. They include truth, but can also be misleading and guilt driven.
My H.S. coach and l knew I could not win the Olympic Trials when l qualified as a senior. Instead of lying and saying, “ I would not know until l tried.” Coach Walsh said, “l know you can’t.” That took away all pressure. Then he said, “But maybe some coach will see you.” Those words opened wide the “opportunity” gate. I was ready to pour my heart into it and do my best.
I hope Olympic coaches use wise opportunity statements rather than guilt these next 3 weeks.
