Setter Showdown

Trade development events for routesetters. We bring together setters from a particular region for a day of setting.

While our events are primarily competitive in nature, they also provide a great opportunity to get to know other setters in your area. There is generally a fair amount of mentoring and transferring of knowledge that occurs, and we'd like to think that each event provides a great deal of fun for everyone involved. The local climbing community is involved in the judging of the climbs set, and we fin

d that this helps to bring a better overall awareness of the setting activity and a greater appreciation by those that climb on our creations. Every event is different and is largely tailored to meet not only our own vision, but that of the hosting facility. Back home and wanted to get results posted from this last weekend's Setter Showdown held at Portland Rock Gym's new Beaverton location.

If you are in the area over the coming weeks, please stop by and sample the boulder problems set during the event.

A huge thank you to all of the participating routesetters at this week's Setter Showdown held at ASCEND South Side. It was wonderful to see and climb on your creations.

As a first, the renowned Setter Showdown is being hosted alongside the Climbing Wall Association Summit. For nearly a decade, Louie Anderson has organized these half-competitions, half-clinics for routesetters interested in learning and challenging themselves. The Showdown will take place at ASCEND South Side on May 15-16.

By 5:00 pm Monday, the boulders will be open to the public. Help pick your favorite boulder so the winner of setting categories can be determined!

We're less than two weeks away from our Setter Showdown in Hawaii at HiClimb, but it's time to announce the next one already.

ASCEND South Side in Pittsburgh reached out last week about hosting a Setter Showdown in conjunction with the annual CWA Summit being hosted in their town. We scrambled over the last few days to get the event organized, sponsors in place, etc. and it's a go.

The dates of the Showdown will be May 15-16, 2023 - the two days before the start of the Summit. Ascend has a great facility, full of varied and interesting climbing terrain, and we're looking forward to working together to bring another great event to our industry.
