Thanks, Mr. Morehouse. You should never have had the rights to develop that land in the first place! Now, can you please rebuild the Civic Arena?

David Morehouse, the president and CEO of the Pittsburgh Penguins, announced Thursday that the team and its development partners are "ceasing our development operations on the Lower Hill," the projected $1 billion redevelopment of the former Civic Arena site.

Five years ago, Preservation Pittsburgh sponsored a design competition to Reuse the Igloo. VITAL was one of the firms that submitted a design. In recognition of the fifth anniversary of their firm, they created new renderings of their plan. All I can say is "If only!" Check it out and view all of the slides relating to the Igloo. Pittsburgh could have created an amazing unique destination. http://www.vital-inc.com/ -communities

If only he had been Mayor in 2009:

Mayor Bill Peduto said he intends to use historic preservation as a “critical tool” in economic development.

“Where we’re using government funds, where we’re expending taxpayer dollars, we’re expecting developers not to put into the trash heap the history of the city of Pittsburgh but polish it up and save it,” he said.

Mr. Peduto said he sees preservation as a key component of both neighborhood development efforts and large-scale projects like the Strip District’s produce terminal. He said he still regrets the decision to tear down the Civic Arena several years ago

It's considered by some to be one of the world's skinniest buildings and it's about to get a makeover. Downtown's "Skinny Building" at the corner of Wood Street and Forbes Avenue and its next door neighbor, the John M. Roberts & Son building, will be restored to their original luster as part of a Do…

The comments are breathtakingly ignorant…
1. There is no lawsuit or legal action here. The actions of the SEA a few years ago are a matter of record. That record is all the NTHP is highlighting. It is up to the Feds to interpret the regs. as part of evaluating the request for funds.
2. "Get over it" is a common refrain; ths not about being over something rather it is about the Federa agencies interetation of anticipatory demolition law and the precedent it could set for any future project where the a building is torn down before funds are requested. The law was set up to punish bad behavior. The SEA and the Lukie made their own bed on this.
3. The funds have to support a transit oriented project. This project has trouble when stacked up against projects that are more transt oriented like the East Libert TRID project.

Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto doesn’t want to fight the battle over the Civic Arena all over again. Mr. Peduto, who as a city councilman opposed the demolition of the domed landmark with the retractable stainless steel roof, said Thursday that it’s time to move on. “The one thing I learned in council…

"It's complicated" is not just a Facebook relationship status -- it's also a pretty accurate description of the current state of affairs with the Astrodome. But as post author Jason Clement says, "Saving places is never easy and rarely straightforward, but when you believe in something, you stay your course. And we believe in the Dome. We hope you do, too." http://savingplac.es/1cpcIeJ

Great job, Bram. I feel sorry for some good intentioned people over the last decade who bought into the Penguins new urban rhetoric (aided and abetted by pros who know better) and resistance to real innovation in community engagement and development partnerships. Its not easy, but had they could taken a progressive approach in the negotiations for the new arena, they could have gotten the investment returns they wanted for themselves and the community. What is so interesting is that the President of the Penguins worked in the Clinton White House and the owner was a big donor and FOB and Rendell. Rendell is the most to blame for this because he gave away the store why Lukie and Dannyboy helped.
