Wanted to share something after seeing quite a few posts from people decreeing "cheap plastic" parts as inferior. These are often also the same people that take offense when you call their plastic gun a plastic gun instead of polymer, so keep that in mind.
Injection molded doesn’t always mean “cheap plastic.”
Injection molding produces engineered, high-precision components, not disposable parts. Modern molds are cut to tight tolerances, and with mold flow software easier and easier to use, they can deliver excellent dimensional repeatability part after part.
Using engineered plastics/polymers (glass-filled nylons, elastomers, high-performance foams), the process enables complex geometry, integrated features, and predictable mechanical behavior, often impossible or inefficient to machine. Predictable behavior is a big one here too.
Once tooling exists, parts are fast, consistent, and easy to produce at scale, with minimal post-processing. When injection-molded parts fail, it’s usually a design or material choice issue, not a limitation of the process.
Done right, injection molding is one of the most accurate, scalable, and engineering-driven manufacturing methods available that allows companies to bring you more, better parts faster.
