Participate in ARP’s inaugural bioblitz and help us survey all of the species that occupy the park! 🐝

A bioblitz is a short, intensive survey of the biodiversity in a specific area. Park visitors and nature enthusiasts are encouraged to participate in our inaugural bioblitz by logging the biodiversity of plants, animals, and fungi that they see at ARP from June 17 to July 16 into a free app called iNaturalist!

📸 This snapshot will show us who and what call ARP home, helping to inform how we manage, maintain, steward, promote, and understand the space that is the park.

It’s super easy to join and you don’t need to be an expert to participate:

🌳Download the iNaturalist app. It can be found in the App Store or on inaturalist.org.
🐦 Create your profile
🌼Search “ARP Summer Bioblitz ‘26” and click join
🐛 Visit ARP and take photos through the app. Start identifying any species of plants, fungi, and animals that you see here.
🍄‍🟫 Continue to visit and stay up to date on all identified species and the leaderboard in the app.

Check out what we've discovered so far using the link in our bio or go to inaturalist.org/projects/arp-summer-bioblitz-26. We can't wait to see what you find!

As we transition into summer, so do the trees! 🌳

The serviceberry trees experienced their fruiting stage a couple of weeks ago, turning the white flowers that we see in the spring to small berries great for the birds to snack on… which they have. Birds have consumed all of the *edible* berries that were on the trees, but they left behind something interesting:

Not only do the birds love serviceberries but so does ‘Rust’, a plant-pathogenic fungi with a powdery orange color and spores. The fungi require two host plants – the serviceberry and juniper or cedars. ARP houses multiple serviceberry trees along with cedars and junipers, allowing this fungus to grow and spread from both the location of the trees and the warm, rainy weather. Wind, water, and insects help spread the fungus from host to host, as temperatures and moisture rise the rust germinates in the fruit’s tissue and creates the “spore horns” and orange color.

The fungus is merely a cosmetic infection for the berries, leaving the trees unharmed and full of berries that look straight out of The Lorax!
