We’re gearing up for the final Summer Concert Series show of the season - who’s ready?! 😍

Next Friday, September 11th, we’ve got a very special two-part show for you. Norside will be opening up for Clarks!

Things you should know:

🚗 Parking is VERY limited! We recommend ride shares and will provide a rideshare drop off location for your convenience. More info to come.

🌯 Come as early as 5pm to claim a spot on the lawn and dinner from a variety of food truck options. Music starts at 7pm.

🪑 Bring your own chairs or picnic blankets

💚 HUGE thank you to our Summer Concert Series sponsor, the Short family, for an incredible season of huge talents.

‼️PSA to vendors: There is a scammer reaching out to food vendors and inviting them to vend at the show. If you were in communications with anyone other than an ARP email address AND/OR were asked to pay a deposit, we’re sorry to inform you that that is not us. Please DM us if you have any questions or concerns.

Our park office had a visitor this weekend, which got us thinking...

Are mantises invasive or native? 🦗

Well, there are around 2,400 species of mantises worldwide, but here in Pennsylvania, you’re most likely to encounter three: the Chinese mantis, European mantis, and Carolina mantis.

The Chinese and European mantises are invasive species.

Based on the size and coloring and mottled, dusty brown camouflage pattern, we can determine that our visitor was native to PA: the Carolina mantis (Stagmomantis carolina). Being smaller than its invasive relatives, the Carolina mantis fits naturally into our local food web and helps keep insect populations in check. 🐛

Mantises are generalist predators, meaning they eat a wide variety of insects and other arthropods. They’re ambush hunters, often staying perfectly still and using camouflage until unsuspecting prey comes within reach.

🌱 A mantis’ life is short but fascinating: In Pennsylvania’s cooler climate, adults typically live for about a year. Females lay egg cases in the fall before dying, and the eggs remain protected through the winter before hatching in spring.

And one more fun fact: despite their insect-like appearance, mantises’ closest living relatives are actually cockroaches and termites! 🤯

Next time you spot one on the trail, take a closer look, you may have found one of Pennsylvania’s fascinating native predators. 💚

Volunteer with us for a couple of hours this Sunday, August 30th!

Join our network of volunteers and help keep the park beautiful by joining our Summer Clean-Up Series. Held monthly throughout the season, these hands-on volunteer days are a great way to give back, get outside, and make a visible impact in the park you love.

From 10am-12pm, volunteers will take part in a variety of meaningful projects that help maintain and improve the space for everyone. Lend your skills to weeding and planting, cleaning up park grounds, or even refinishing park furniture and fencing. Whether you’re a seasoned DIYer or just ready to roll up your sleeves, there’s a task for everyone.

Come early for light refreshments and mingling while we prepare the team. ☕🥯 To sign up, go to alleghenyrivertrailpark.org/become-a-volunteer/

Many years ago, the deep scarlet blossoms of the cardinal flower captivated explorers, today it still captivates park goers and hummingbirds in our very own wetland habitat. 🗺️

The flower was dubbed the “cardinal flower” after explorers connected its rich colored blossoms to the scarlet red traditionally worn by Roman Catholic Cardinals.

The flower made its way from North America to Europe, adding a brilliant pop of color to gardens - but the cardinal flower is more than just its beauty!

🪶The blooms are tubular in shape, perfect for the long bill of Hummingbirds; making them an easily accessible and vital late-summer food source.

💦The cardinal flower thrives in wet soil, absorbing run off, stabilizing wet soil and helping control erosion.

❌🦌The flower contains toxic alkaloids, giving the foliage an unpleasant smell and taste, making the plant generally deer and rabbit resistant.
