Le’Veon Bell is one of the biggest “what ifs” in Steelers history.
I wanted the Steelers to extend him. I really did. At the time, they offered him the most lucrative deal for a running back in NFL history. But Bell turned it down because he wanted to be compensated as more than just a running back — as a true dual-threat offensive weapon.
And honestly, I understand his argument. Players like Bell who can run, catch, and completely change a game are often unfairly lumped into the “just a RB” salary category. The problem is, that’s still the reality of how the NFL values the position.
Looking back, you can’t help but wonder what would have happened if he stayed in Pittsburgh. That Steelers team had a legitimate chance to compete for a Super Bowl. If Bell stays healthy, wins a championship, and remains part of that offense with Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown, his legacy — and possibly his life after football — could have looked completely different.
I can’t hate the guy for betting on himself. Every player has the right to chase what they believe they’re worth. But it does make you question whether agents always have the player’s long-term best interests in mind.
Sometimes players become pieces in a negotiation battle where the biggest win is the biggest contract, not necessarily the best situation for their career, happiness, or legacy.
Being young, talented, and having millions of dollars put in front of you can cloud anyone’s judgment.
Bell bet on himself. Unfortunately, that gamble didn’t pay off the way he hoped. Years later, seeing him deal with legal issues surrounding child support is another reminder that NFL careers are short, and financial decisions made during those years can impact the rest of your life.
The biggest contract isn’t always the best outcome.
Sometimes the right team, the right culture, and the right legacy matter just as much.
