“How could they possibly follow the same programming as the rest of the gym?! That’s so irresponsible!” - some jagoff probably

Well - when you think about it, why would their programming be any different?

Their goals are still to
- build strength
- build lean mass
- move better and more easily
- maintain independence
- improve health

The same programming principles apply…

The main differences lie in how the programming is applied and executed within the session.

You may need to allow more rest time.

And you may not get thru as much as you would with another client.

But plenty of research shows that the greatest benefits come from the first 2 sets of resistance training.

If you’re interested in learning how to design programs that are appropriate, effective, and efficient for you to create for any of your clients just comment or DM “5MP” and I’ll send you my free 5 minute program design guide.

Learning to be fully present in each moment despite the external (and internal for that matter) noise is an underrated skill.

And it’s an unexpected side effect of working with a personal trainer who is equipped to help build that skill set.

Take this example - in the downtime between sets, coaches can choose to talk about anything under the sun.

They can tell you about their own training, their own nutrition plan, or their personal life.

They can also ask about your training, nutrition, and personal life.

Or they can use this is an opportunity to teach and reinforce what’s happening within that session.

It takes a level of intentionality to make each client the subject of your focus.

But it goes a long way to helping them be more present with us as coaches.

We are both forced to focus on what’s right in front of us rather than escape into outside topics.

Next time you have downtime in a session - ask yourself if you’re recognizing the teacher present in that precise moment.

“Be where your feet are.”

Easiest concept to understand. Hardest thing to actually do under load.

Save this — you’ll see this pattern in your clients this week.

The grade school in my neighborhood has these exercise stations along the sidewalk which got me thinking back to a discussion I was apart of at the national conference a couple of years ago🤔

How do kids actually learn to move, become healthier, and develop athleticism in this day and age?

Because a lot of what was discussed that day centered around how much variance there is in phys ed curriculums and PE teachers credentials, approaches, and resources.

And also how important modeling and teaching the next generation how to lead a healthy lifestyle really is.

That responsibility doesn’t just fall on PE teachers.
It falls on us too — the coaches and trainers embedded in every community.

The ones who get this right aren’t just building better clients. They’re building a healthier culture around them.

The kids in your neighborhood are watching. What are you modeling?

Also says hi 👋

Always know what you’ll do should you hit a snag.

It’s very rare that what you program is exactly what you and your client will do to a T.

Be prepared to adjust.

Don’t get caught on the spot.

That’s it. Don’t let your certification text be the last book you crack.

When you view yourself as an expert it can be confusing and even frustrating when people question your choices.

Even more so when those people are literally paying for your expertise.

So why do clients so often ask to change the exercises or how they are done?

91% of the time it’s because they are wary of getting hurt and the other 9% is because they are just being weenies.

It’s easy to get frustrated.

But it’s a million times more beneficial to all parties involved to hear them and work towards building trust.

Sometimes just listening is all you need to do.

Sometimes adjustments really do need to be made.

Don’t discredit their concerns.

Acknowledge them.

Adjust (if truly necessary).

Attack the weight.

In my experience, most people simply need reassurances that they can indeed do the hard things you’ve tasked them with.

Be their safety blanket but don’t coddle them.

They can do hard things.

And it’s your job to help them do it safely.

Despite all the BS in this world, every day above ground is a great day to be alive!

Remember to be grateful for what you have - both the things actualized and the opportunities ahead.

Completing a traditional 4 year degree in a matter of weeks may be a bit absurd…

But isn’t spending $200K to complete a degree that has extraneous course requirements that in no way apply to the desired outcome (finding a career that is both fulfilling and lucrative) also a bit absurd?

IMO a mix of asynchronous coursework and hands on practical applications of this theoretical knowledge is the best learning structure for most of us these days.

That’s exactly how I have structured my mentorship programs.

I give you the tools needed to understand the X’s and O’s as well as projects and chances to apply the work, make the mistakes, and learn from doing the damn thing.
